SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #10 (DC COMICS)

He who laughs last, laughs loudest.

The new Prankster has been making a name for himself in Metropolis. Bodies have been falling and more people have taken notice. One interested party is Superman.

When Perry White becomes his next target, the Man of Tomorrow steps in to stop the attack. This fires up the violent upstart. His ego takes a hit when Clark Kent doesn’t give him credit for his work. Guess who just became the next target?

SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #10 by Dan Slott, Mike Norton, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe is no laughing matter when Clark is in danger.

Let’s see what kind of chaos is happening now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Slott gives readers a classic superhero close to this latest chapter. The banter between the young upstart and the elder Prankster shows the brooding clash of mentality. This amplifies even more so when Oswald Loomis meets with Intergang. Readers watch as the seedy dealings become more complicated. This spins into a more clear-cut path for both Prankster and Superman to follow. Pacing revs up a touch when an attempt on Clark Kent’s life goes sideways.

The incident showcases vintage Superman action and humor. How else can you explain Clark Kent disappearing and Superman randomly appearing in place? It’s a timeless trope that hits the mark. Once Kent confronts Loomis, there’s a fair amount of swerves and humor added into the mix. This lets the story move into its final stages. There’s plenty of Superman moments to rally around here. Readers see how events clean up nicely to usher a definitive end to this caper. A fun break before what’s coming next.

Norton and Maiolo begins with the look at the crime family in discussion of Kent’s moves. There’s plenty of rash reactions connected to a bruised ego. The back and forth leads readers into a meeting of criminal minds with Intergang. Panels show how dealings have turned off the path to shake things up. Kent’s involvement comes fast with a solid build-up. Adverting danger, the art shows Superman ready to take on his challengers. This gives way to a fantastic full page image of Supes in action.

The brief moments with Jonathan Kent tease a very dire situation. They are quick but noteworthy. From here, the images go back to the playful nature of Prankster’s game. The confrontation with Clark Kent goes through a few different looks. His trap on Kent gives way to a heroic half page image. This sends the book into a steady finish. Superman’s curiosity moves into a parting sequence with the crime leads. The closing pages wrap up events on solid footing with a nice parting last panel.

FINAL GRADE: 8

Superman’s latest threat proves to be nothing to laugh about. Slott stages a very direct superhero take with the writing. Norton and Maiolo’s art captures the classic superhero images needed for this chapter. It’s an enjoyable break from the more chaotic world of the DCI with K.O. looming heavily. Check it out.
