SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #8 by Dan Slott, Jeremy Adams, Lucas Meyer, Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Slott and Adams strike again to present a very different heroic tale. Superman’s overthinking leads to challenging Lois Lane’s investigative nature. The writing shows Clark telling she’s spreading herself too thin with her many hats. His message isnt without purpose. Lois’ role as Daily Planet EIC amongst other duties can lead to burnout. It doesn’t take long to reassure there is nothing to worry about. The rest of the plot sets up very easily. It’s the other dynamic at hand that gives this story some edge.
Guy Gardner being Guy Garnder is nothing but win here. Considering Adams’ experience with handling Green Lanterns, the dialogue is very natural for Guy. Once the danger of a hijacking starts to take place, the ornery Green Lantern takes the spotlight. Even with Superman crashing the party, this feels more like Guy’s lead than anything. It results in a solid finish with Superman coming to terms about his wife’s work schedule. A fun issue for fans of everyone involved.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!
Meyer and Maiolo lay into the big event feel of a space launch with the opening. Readers watch as the main characters start their subtle moves. It teases an alien threat before swinging back into Clark’s worry of Lois. There is plenty of emotion circling these panels. It is a fleeting sense of normalcy until this issue’s guest star makes his entrance. There is no disappointing of this factor.
A two page spread welcomes Guy in with a touch of snark and comedy. It is easy to sense Guy’s enjoyment” of the assignment. The art speeds up the space exploration with a solid full page image, The mood lightens when the passengers see Guy flying by. Once Superman gets involved, everythig changes quickly. Personalities clash quickly. Meyer’s display of Guy plaining the situation is priceless. Readers watch as the conflict resolves in a very standard way. The final page gifts them with parting panels of the key players. It’s filled with feel good moments which compliments the overall story told.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
“The Greatest Green Lantern” and The Man of Tomorrow team up for a thrilling outer space tale for the ages. Slott and Adams present a timeless take with their writing skills. Meyer and Maiolo bring out the best (and worst) of the co-star while presenting the drama. If you’re lookin for a great superhero tale, this is your book.
