Captain America #7 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 7th issue of Captain America from Marvel Comics!

Things are a little tumultuous to say the least in the Marvel Comics Universe. Victor Von Doom is dead, and now there’s a mad scramble to assume power in the vacuum that’s now Latveria. On one side you have Captain America & his team, and on the other is none other than General Ross. So just how is this going to play out? Let’s jump into it!

Credit: Marvel Comics // Captain America #7 by Chip Zdarsky (Writer), Delio Diaz & Frank Alpizar (Artists), Romulo Fajardo Jr (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer), Valerio Schiti & Frank Martin (Cover) is another great issue that continues to set up the proverbial chess board for what’s sure to be an intriguing story.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

Chip Zdarsky hit another home run out of the park with this issue, and it continues to give me some of the same vibes I got when I watch Captain America: The Winter Solider. The political intrigue is off the charts with this one and it’s quickly shaping up to be one of the best stories Marvel will tell this year.

This issue is the second part of the Dooms Shadow storyline, and the world is still dealing with the fallout of the death of Doctor Doom. The story picks up right where the first issue ended with our heroes standing toe to toe with a hulked out General Ross who’s ready to start fighting anyone who gets in his way. Nick Fury does eventually show up and call Ross on his bluff, and I’m sure that isn’t going to be the last interaction we see between those two but it’s definitely a matchup to keep an eye out for down the road.

The part I particularly enjoyed the most however was once Steve & his team were able to get inside Latveria and see what was going on inside the country. So many times when you look back and study a war in history you pay attention to the battles the size of the forces and the outcome, but there’s more to the battles than that. The people in the towns & cities of the countries that battle took place in play a huge part in the story as well. So to get to see what’s going on with the average folks and how things are developing behind the proverbial frontlines is such a fascinating perspective.

The path Steve takes in this issue is also a fascinating one because it feels so on brand for him, and it makes so much sense. Then you get to the point of the ending and who shows up. I won’t say who it is, but to the best of my knowledge this is a completely new character that adds one heck of a twist to the plot. I’m not sure what their motivation is but it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out.

The Artwork

Delio Diaz, Frank Alpizar & Romulo Fajardo Jr all do a fantastic job with the art in this issue. I loved the way the issue is drawn because it gives it a feeling of scale & scope. By that I mean, this isn’t just going to be about Captain America because his name is on the title but it’s wide ranging, and the artwork gives that overall feeling. I also loved the use of color in the issue because despite how dark and uncertain things feel, there’s still a sense and feeling of hope with the use of color.

FINAL POINT: The series continues it’s roaring start with another great issue that continues to build in intrigue. Together with artwork that is sure to impress, this is a series setting itself as the standard for Captain America storytelling.

Overall Grade: 9/10
