SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #9 by Dan Slott, Mike Norton,Marcelo Maiolo & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Slott is back on solo writing duties for this chapter (Jeremy Adams was on board for the past few issues). A night out with fellow news collogues leads to a break down of the killings taking place. All of which have a twisted method behind them. Unfazed by this is Vicky Vale, who reminds readers this is a normal day in Gotham City. Superman gets back on the reporting trail with a press conference with Mayor Perry White. After touting a win over the Mannheim Crime family, it was only a matter of time before someone plotted revenge.
Readers watch as Minnie Mannheim meets with Oswald Loomis for action. Slott throws in the new Prankster looming in the wings, waiting for action. His demeanor is very similar to Deadpool as far as mannerism and humor. The jokes stop when Perry is attacked at a Baseball game. Readers watch as the attack is thwarted in time by Big Blue. The action doesn’t stop there as it rolls into another attack on White days later. The writing shows how committed the Prankster is to his mission. It leads to some solid action moments before going into close. Once here, the closing dialogue rocks Prankster’s plans. A proclamation caps off a classic Superman tale. It should be very interesting where this all goes from here.

Norton and Maiolo open with a very classic look at reporters at happy hour. Each recap of the Killer’s unique attacks is highlighted with Maiolo’s bright coloring. They cover up the true terror involved. Only one at the table seems to ignore the jokes. Clark’s demeanor is very compassionate to the victims. It doesn’t compute with Steve Lombard. Even as Clark moves to cover Perry’s press conference, the vintage imagery is on full display. Its’ happier times fade a bit when the bad guys crash the party.
The New Prankster is given a very cartoonish entrance. His mannerism is familiar to the more deranged rogues fans have seen. This leads into his baseball attack. The full image of Superman swopping in is perfect for the moment at hand. Perry and Supes’ interaction is organic as the old friends try sorting out who’s behind the hit. While brief, the Jon Kent pages mirror the zany side of the Superman life. It provides a solid break before the last attack. Readers see Clark challenged out in the open with grave outcomes. The near full panels help push events towards the closing. A final vision of Clark addressing the public via TV closes down shop with a dangerous warning as its endpoint.
FINAL GRADE: 8.3
There’s nothing funny about a mounting body count in Metropolis in this latest chapter of Superman’s latest title. Slott’s writing plays up to the outrageousness of its’ main rogue. Norton and Maiolo provide readers with glimpses of the unstable madness with the art. This story encompasses all the aspects of the Man of Steel that readers have grown up with. Check it out.
