WONDER WOMAN #29 by Stephanie Williams, Jeffrey Spokes, & Clayton Cowles (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Williams opens up with Diana’s uneasy return home. After dealing with her latest threat, she seems anxious and in desperate need of refocusing. The writing shows a vulnerability that Diana doesn’t want to open. Nubia’s calming dialogue eases her to let her guard down. In thinking she is “weak”, Nubia is fast to redirect the narrative into true strength. Readers watch as more familiar faces come in to play as Diana weighs options. It results agreeing to let the others watch Lizzie as she takes a break. The fallout of this decision leads into a unique situation.
While trying to remedy the child’s restlessness, an idea is hatched. The dialogue between the cast presents itself with some semblance of reason. At first notion, the concept is very left field. Once Donna Troy breaks it down, it opens up more room to grow. It is at this stage that the story takes a few giant steps forward. Readers witness a sparring session shrouded in underlying rage. Williams peels back layers of each combatant as the strikes become all too real. Once this is drastically halted, the final act teases the evil brewing. It leaves the audience with much to process as the final page reveals more clues. This caps off a solid introduction into an ever growing tale.
Spokes begins the issue with a full shot of Diana and Lizzie returning home. The coloring of the Themyscira skyline makes these images pop off the page. Nubia makes a grand entrance as Diana is clearly shaken up from events. Their interaction is led by Nubia’s confidence. It extinguishes Diana’s doubts with each passing panel. Her reaction to events never waivers from her belief in the matters at hand. This allows for the supporting cast to crash the party. A full page image sends Diana away for the chapter with the others ready for the spotlight.
The reactions to the idea of combat mirror what readers are thinking during this sequence. It moves to a slower pace start. The fight escalates very quickly with another party jumping in the fray. Pacing moves very quickly from this stage. It leads into a great full page image of all three combatants in action. The rage pouring out of all indicates how fast events have changed. This continues to grow until a two page splash ends the fighting. Readers see how this leads into a decreasing fallout point. Once cooler heads start to prevail, the emotions steer into a new path. The full page shot of the group understanding what just happened assists with the closing page’s impact. Parting panels tease what evil lies in waiting as the chapter wraps up. It’s a very sound landing spot for the next issue to take off from.
FINAL GRADE: 8.6
An evil lurks in Themyscira with Diana Prince away to refocus. Williams pens a superb opening chapter with fresh scenarios thrown into the drama. Spokes crafts solid imagery to bring out the inner emotions toyed with by a mysterious figure. This story has a solid foundation to grow from that fans shouldn’t pass on.
