*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Thompson goes in an interesting direction for this pairing. Using Jack Grim and Veronica Cale to set the trap teases more sinister moves in the air. It’s a great follow-up to “Absolute Evil” form October. Once the story begins in Gotham, both heroes distinct personalities shine. Unlike their DCU counterparts, the dialogue has a lighter feel for an initial outing. Seeing Batman not overdoing his brooding is refreshing. It bounces off Diana’s more optimistic tone to create common ground. Even when a quick jab about “staying in shadows” is mentioned, Diana’s response takes Batman for surprise. This helps bridge their goals to head into the heart of the matter.
The investigation of the crime scene proves enlightening. Readers watch as Diana breaks down the magical aspects of her persona. In an unusual response, Batman isn’t brash in his acceptance. It is a more accepting tone than one may think. The writing allows them to be open in their roles. This makes the true conflict have a deeper impact. It shows the hidden moves of evil while progressing in pushing Batman past his comfort zone. The result offers more insight into the overall view of heroes in the Absolute world. This pushes into the closing act of the issue. Wonder Woman’s optimism steps firmly into the light. It leaves readers and Batman in a more jovial view of a future uncertain, but one filled with a sliver of hope.
Sherman and Bellaire open with a one page look at Cale’s twisted games. It is a devious take which helps move events to Gotham. The two page view of the gritty city is incredible. It is vintage Batman. From ere, the art brings the two heroes together. Sherman’s unique panel structure amplifies the realm of possibilities. Watching Diana’s calm demeanor approach Batman adds a playful vision into the dark world. A half page panel of the two sitting on a building edge is prime example of this. Their facial expression are vastly different. This only grows as the investigation starts at the crime scene.
Readers watch as the dreary setting goes only more worrisome with discoveries. Their dramatic entrance into a fight will bring a smile to readers faces. The art presents some quick action before a move swings everything upside down. The close-up on Diana’s eyes pops off the page. This leads into a more frantic pace. Knowing the unpredictability of the moment, the art team lean into this with the panel set-up. A superb image of Diana ready to cut Batman raises the tension. It boils over into an even louder action image. The fallout brings the art full circle. It mirrors the fast friends and possible future meetings forthcoming. The chapter ends with a very unlikely image, but one needed to make the landing stick.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Two of the Absolute Trinity meet with high expectations. The result is fresh stance on a seasoned friendship. Thompson’s writing carries a more grounded look at two characters destined to become friends. Sherman and Bellaire craft amazing imagery to set this story apart from past incarnations. This starts a journey fans can simply call “absolutely necessary”.
