THE FLASH #30 (DC COMICS)

Wally West is in a race against not only time, but the Speed Force itself!

Bart Allen’s attempt to stop Darkseid form ascending into his current form backfired badly. This resulted in a time-travel trainwreck of epic proportions. Darkseid has enjoyed watching this unfold and looks to put the nail in the Flash legacy coffin once and for all!

Bart’s attempts to stop the Absolute Dark Lord have led to travelling to Barry Allen’s greatest sacrifice and stopping it! That means only one thing: Bart Allen crashes into “Crisis on Infinite Earths”!

THE FLASH #30 by Mark Waid, Christopher Cantwell, Vasco Georgiev, Matt Herms & Buddy Beaudoin strikes like lightning on its’ DC K.O. Tie-In finale.

Let’s break down what’s unfolding now.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Waid and Cantwell waste no time in opening with the iconic moment. It makes a loud statement as Allen plans on doing the impossible. Bart Allen’s interference throws all into flux. The dialogue shows Bart’s obliviousness to what is going on. All the while, Darkseid watches with dreadful glee. Once his plans begin, the story takes on a whole new feel. It no longer centers on Bart and his heroic attempts. This moves on Wally West trying to save the Speed Force from imploding from within. The result is more complicated than expected.

Readers watch as Max Mercury joins the anti-Darkseid attack. Waid and Cantwell tie this plot point back to a forgotten moment of “All In”. A new player enters the field which proves impactful in Wally’s efforts. His direct attack onto Darkseid is met with varying results. There’s great action commencing which builds into a definitive turning point. Conflicts switch gears into a challenge of wills. The writing throws in one last curve ball to sway events. The fallout ties up the closing chapter on a steady path. It’s a solid finish before the new creative team takes the regins.

Georgiev & Herms present the opening full page with the eerire sense of the Anti-Monitor. There’s no escaping the dreadful feel when seeing this scenario. Once Bart Allen crashes into the scenes, dynamics changes. It leads into great banter between the both. All the while Darkseid and his legion watch with glee with what’s happening. Seeing Darkseid with a smile is a very rae sight. This fades away once Wally West arrives to battle.

Action scenes flow quickly as tie is running out. The pivot to Max Mercury breaks up this momentum for a spell. In its place turns into a view of discovery and faint hope. The half panel discovery ushers in the latest ally into battle. This all ties together with Wally’s fight better than expected. Their dramatic entrance starts off another great series of action panels. It moves aside to let the major storyline wrap up events. Readers watch as the tension raises to a fever pitch. One last surprise plays their hand to become the tide-turner. It leaves in its wake a stellar re-telling of Allen’s fateful moments. Readers watch as the event is capped off with a heart-warming vision of the fallout. This spins into the final page with a fitting parting panel. One race is over. Another is just beginning.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

Bart Allen’s race against Darkseid leads to a strong finish in its’ arc finale. Waid and Cantwell dabble into DC lore with great success via the writing. Georgiev & Herms hit the marks with their sleek panels. It’s a fitting close to what has been a highly entertaining tale.
