SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #11 by Dan Slott, Lucas Meyer, Giuliano Peratelli & Dave Sharpe (DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Slott went some places on this issue. Readers are served with a “This is your life Jon Kent” sequence to open the book. Master Txyl makes a terrifying entrance into affairs. The writing is deceptive in the figure’s plans. This becomes even more complicated with Kent having no idea who this is and what they’re doing. His “I’m a Nice guy” line doesn’t give much confidence to the audience in how he’s going to win this bout. Even when a rally is made, there’s little belief behind this.
Events move into a more direct approach concerning what the being is doing. It’s at this point there is some sense of true danger in play. The writing shows Txyl’s manipulations to break the confidence in Kent. Readers see his actually compelling case. Kent’s response is fitting to his character. He has never been a Clark 2.0. One moment defines this point as the true fight commences. What transpires here is a very loud stat quo change. It leaves the villain shattered in what has just resulted. However, that is not where this match-up finishes. Slott throws a fastball at readers they won’t see coming. Leave no doubt, the final page will be raising some eyebrows when finished.

Meyer & Peratelli begin with an impressive recap of Jon Kent’s life. The flashback pages unload of what has comprised the Son of Kal-El thus far. It makes Txyl’s entrance all the more intriguing. The full page image shows a fight in the future before another full shot sees them face off in the present* time. A fantastic two-page spread starts off this round by bringing Jon Kent into battle whether he wants it or not. This leads into an eventual brawl. The initial blow is given center stage on a full page. When this spills over into another two-page vision, Txyl’s motives become more direct.
The flashbacks to Kent’s failures start seeping in the young hero. His mannerisms shift slightly to indicate the impact. There’s nothing off limits in this painful recap. This pushes Kent into attempting a rally of confidence. A full image shows his internal transformation. Where it leads is to some quick action and a new stat quo. The near full image concludes the fight but not without one last jab. The final page is guaranteed to get reactions out of readers. One last full shot shows how things are now gone from bad to astronomically complicated. Excellent work on bringing this story to page.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
Jon Kent’s life may never be the same after an unlikely confrontation shows him a destiny in doubt. Slott takes readers on a complex journey with the script. Meyer & Peratelli craft this meeting with a deep rooted emotional intensity. Brace for the last page. You’re not ready for what is happening here.
