THE MORTAL THOR #8 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 8th issue of The Mortal Thor from Marvel Comics!

The story thus far has been about Sigurd Jarlson, the man who looks like Thor and wields a hammer about as effectively as Thor does. Things up to this point have been almost exclusively focused on Sigurd, however there’s more to the world of Asguard than Sigurd. So let’s jump into it!

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

I’ve really enjoyed the series up to this point, and each issue has been very interesting with the twists and turns that Al Ewing has taken us along the way. Making Thor a mortal man named Sigurd with no memory of his past life is an interesting concept that has some potential for some great stories. However this issue just isn’t in that same category for me.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the worst issue I’ve ever read. However by no means is it one of the best one’s out there on the stands this week. Will what happens in the story in this issue pay off? Eventually it will I’m sure, and I’ll be interested to see if it comes true or maybe takes a different turn. However for the present I can’t help but feel like this issue is filler until that point.

The positive of the issue is though that we do get a glimpse at what’s going on with the asguardian universe outside of Sigurd. It isn’t much to go on, but it does show that the world has moved on after Thor’s “death”. So while it doesn’t move the overall story surrounding Thor, it does add some depth to the larger universe surrounding Thor.

The Artwork

Juann Cabal & Jesus Aburtov did a great job with the artwork in the issue that. I really enjoyed how varied the artwork was with the different realms we got to see throughout the issue. There was definitely a lot going on in this issue and the artwork rose to occasion.

Overall Grade: 6/10

The first miss in the series for me, but I’m sure it will come back to play an important part down the road. For now though, this issue is one that I wouldn’t rush to read first in your pull list.

Thank you for taking the time to check out my review. Be sure to reach out to me on Twitter, and let me know what you thought of the issue!
