SUPERMAN #33 by Joshua Williamson, Hayden Sherman, Alejandro Sánchez & Ariana Maher(DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Williamson dives deep into the mythos of Lex Luthor. Seeing the journey he has carried himself on, this fight proves to unlock the unrelenting will behind the man. The first round recaps much of where Lex has been over the course of this series. The writing doesn’t pull punches on how Lex sees things. It might be the reason he loses round one. Readers watch as it doesn’t take long for him to recover. It is almost like he threw the first round to see what his supernatural opponent had in his arsenal.

The second round is where Luthor goes for a surprising move. It fits the M.O. of these second rounds with the creative choices made. The mood also doesn’t leave Luthor’s control. It becomes evident rather quickly how the tides are turning. Even the side plot with Lois and Superboy-Prime doesn’t dent the foundation Luthor makes. This transitions into the third round easily. The writing unleashes a vicious Luthor who goes in for the finish. Its’ aftermath solidifies where Luthor was going in his own mind. This is interrupted by the closing pages. In these moments, events snap back to the overall picture. Knowing how we got here makes the ride all that more enjoyable.

If you’re going to have a fill-in artists, you can ask for better than Sherman. The art team doesn’t hesitate to take Luthor into a dark memory of his past. This proves to be the driving point of his motivations. The two page splash is enhances with Mahar’s lettering. It fits the brawling while connecting with the audience. Another magnificent two page spread recaps in detail Lex’s journey during the action. Sherman’s full page finish is a statement maker. Nobody structures weaving panels better. This is another prime example of that talent.

Readers watch as another stellar full page image brings both fighters into round two. Their armor choices will draw some attention. It doesn’t take long for the action to rev up again. A two page spread juggles all the fact paced moves. The round ends with a monstrous exclamation point. This segways into a darker realm for the last round. The art locks in on the dark overtones to present the round in all its’ intensity. the issue wraps up with a series of full pages and well staged panels. None greater than a distress call. There’s no hesitation on what that represents> A strong finish after a bold introspective.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Is DC K.O. ready for Lex Luthor? The Demon finds out the answer very fast & very painfully in this tie-in chapter. Williamson’s fantastic writing peels back the layers of the villain to expose some truths. Sherman steps in and provides a visual experience like no one else. With Lex back on his confident ways, can anyone stand in his way?
