*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Hampton takes this issue on two very different directions. The first revolves around Gardner’s latest troubles. Gardner’s arrogant trek into Biot leads into a direct confrontation. Even with Aja’s help, it isn’t as easy to overcome. The writing allows for some quick action as it moves the plot along. Readers watch as it leads into some bait and switching to spice events up. The result is a exciting twist into the mystery of the entities. Great cliffhanger to walk away to next issue on.
That said, the stronger story is clearly Stewart’s. Being possessed by Parallax unlocks the weight of past failures in his life. The opening moments of this portion allows a guiding force to take him through the darkness. Their dialogue is powerful as it connects to readers as much as Stewart. Soranik Natu’s sub plot adds to the expansion of Parallax’s tight grip of fear. Stewart’s quest is the show-stealer without question. This leads into an emotional turning point before heading into its’ finish. Hampton holds nothing back as the somber realization sinks in. It results in a fitting finish to this portion as more looks to surface in its’ aftermath. Excellent story here.
The art team keeps things very fast moving for this issue. Guy’s arrival on Biot is met with aggression. The panels show the quick action before another player enters the game. This allows for Aja to step in and hijack the panels. There’s plenty of standard Green Lantern combat on display. Sharpe’s lettering makes one particular panel jump of the page. It moves events inot its’ parting image. The full page shot makes a loud statement as Guy’s plans go sideways fast. Readers wouldn’t want it any other way.
Stewart’s saga starts with descending timeline panels. The result is a highly tense confrontation. Stewart’s re-enforcements make an excellent debut in a mid panel shot. Natu’s time is short, but capped off with a great full page shot. Once events come back to Stewart, the art team delivers on heavy emotional pieces right to the end. None might be greater than the final stop at a grave. Readers can’t help but connect with Stewart shedding some tears as he addresses his demons. This sparks the closing moments where his conflict ends It leaves room for much healing to commence. A very solid performance with the art for this one.
FINAL POINT: 8.8
Gardner and Stewart carry heavy burdens into their latest conflicts in this excellent chapter. Hampton taps into the deep emotional elements for Stewarts battle. The art team blaances the action out with powerful panels. GLC continues to impress in the post DC K.O. era.
