ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN #13 by Al Ewing, Eleonora Carlini, Ivan Plascencia & Lucas Gattoni (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Ewing presents a very different issue than expected for this chapter. He steers away from Tomar’s arrival to Earth to focus on a few notable names. Sinestro’s talk with one Adam Strange proves dangerous. Their tone is cold and direct. It fits the longtime GL nemesis. In the case of the Overseer of Rann, his story heads into a darker path. After rallying his troops, Adam decides to take out a scientist with ruthless drive behind it.
Readers see how the conflict becomes personal very fast. The dialogue covers up much of the sadness as events move into a scientific discovery. This leads another player to enter the game. From here, its’ very fast moving to get to the close. There are some noteworthy points as the conflict escalates. There isn’t anything very drastic except a surprise execution. Subtract that from the mix and its’ very standard in set-up. The ending is more puzzling with its’ cliffhanger. This was a touch disappointing as Tomar and Jo were very infrequently mentioned. How this ultimately pans out is very up in the air.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!
Carlini and Plascencia present the unhinged look at Sinestro as he mobilizes his forces. The conversation with Rann’s overseer carries a cold chill as Sinestro proclaims his orders. This sparks Adam to take a drastic action. Readers watch him order an execution. Carlini throws in a mind-bending sequence to exemplify the Blackstars’ fear powers. The person behind the kill shot exposes a heart-breaking secret. This allows the story to move forward to a very unorganized second half.
Seeing the Blackstars look into the new equipment spawns more problems to be had. A new character makes her way into view via near full shot. The time displaced hero wastes no time in fighting. This leads to some chaotic action sequences. Pacing speeds up to lock in on the fighting. Adam’s usage of his powers unlocks a near full shot of combat. It ends very abruptly with no punches pulled. The fallout is a but more confusing. Trying to cypher where the final page leads should tied over fans until next issue. There will be many questions to be had on this one.
FINAL POINT: 7.8
With a lack of Jo or any of the current storyline players, this issue builds up for more in the future, but doesn’t help the present. Ewing’s writing welcomes in the timeline hijinx to mixed success. The art team puts together some unique visuals as the story takes a few uneven turns. There’s a lot to try processing here.
