DETECTIVE COMICS #1109 by Tom Taylor, Mikel Janín and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Taylor devotes a great portion o the issue to Psion’s story. Seeing the young hero step into the Lion’s den makes for an interesting start. The writing shows his novice persona settle in once some sparring begins. This escalates into present time and Queen’s freefall. Batman’s inner monologue breaks down Queen’s skill in surviving the fall. It lands in a awkward spot where Bats and Queen are cracking one-liners. From here, the tone shifts when the find the would-be assassin.
Readers watch as the pair goes right to work. Taylor spins in high stakes action in the pursuit. The tempo is quickened as each panel shows the young child throwing Batman off his game. Blame it on underestimation, but Batman loses control of the situation. The writing moves him into a defensive stance. It is a rare feat but the story takes full advantage of the upper hand. One character makes a move which swings everything into a new direction. This moves events into a puzzling close. A new dynamic is added which has yet to tip their hand. How this plays out is anyone’s guess but what a trip to get here.

Janín returns with a throwback look to Psion’s story. Seeing the heroes in a more easier stance proves welcomed. The reactions to the young hero are mixed but quickly subside. As a sparring session begins, panels swiftly show more promise in the boy’s skills than advertised. This reflects Queen and his freefall. The half page image shows a fast panic. This transitions into a more dramatic save via full page. Once Batman arrives, a few panels add some humor into the chase via half page.
Events return to the chase of the assassin. Her expressions as mischievous in nature. Once her cover is blown, a high sky chase commences. Batman’s flight is a solid mix of half and full panels. It results in a shocking outcome. A loud series of panels march into a near fata result. Giving an arrow an action perspective panel is a nice touch to the chaos ensuing. The final act raises some eyebrows with One character’s expressions. Not knowing if she’s setting up someone or being genuine proves a welcomed challenge for the reader. This is complimented by the final panel. A very steady ride through the action filled pages.
FINAL POINT: 8.6
Queen’s freefall from grace spins Batman into an aerial attack he may not defeat. Taylor gives more questions to ponder with the writing. Janín returns with a speedy pace on the action art. The mystery unfolding with “Psion” is one not to miss..
