DETECTIVE COMICS #1108 by Tom Taylor, Pete Woods, Bruno Abdias and Wes Abbott (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Taylor opens with a look back at the trio stopping a charity robbery. The writing locks in on that classic time period with their dialogue. You know its gonna be fin issue when you see a Boxing Glove arrow appear. Once this moves forward, readers get introduced to a hero named Prion. The young hero makes quite the first impression. His interaction with the trio comes off with optimism behind it. Fast forward to the present and how times have changed. Readers see who’s grave they are standing in front of.

Their respects move events into a high speed chase to save another witness. Even as the “Hatchbat” steals scenes, it proves to tie back into the case at hand. Taylor presents a strong look at the trio in action. It results in an exciting rescue but not one without pause. The writing doesn’t let up on Batman’s concerns over the case. Protecting the witness remains in front of his view. This gives way to Oliver Queen’s business meeting with Klep representatives. The meeting goes as one might think. Queen’s “subtle” talk is expressed in a perfect manner. It leads to a more surprising finish. Another layer has been added into the puzzle. How this factors in will be fun to watch.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!

Woods splits art duties with Abdias for this issue. Woods handles the flashback sequences and closing portion of the book. The opening pages carry a vintage feel to them as the crime takes place. A near full page image ushers in the trio to action. Panels move events swiftly into Prion’s debut. The upstart hero gets a half panel shot to start his involvement. Readers watch as action justifies his placement in this mission. The aftermath instills hope for a future. A great contrast to Queen’s business meeting. The panels on display there show Queen owning the room. His “note” panel speaks volumes to conclude the meeting. The closing pages teases more question coming. This moves to a solid cliffhanger image to wrap events with.

Abdias focuses in on the current grave scenes and rescue mission. The debut of “The HatchBat” is a fun moment as Queen’s reactions are priceless. It leads into a more impactful high speed chase. A near full shot shows the vehicle hit the water for making the save. Readers watch as the heroes go to work. Black Canary gets a full page image to spotlight her response. This moves events towards a safer landing area. The art gives one more classic “HatchBat “ moment before leaving to a steady landing spot.

FINAL POINT: 8.8

Gotham’s new trinity finds themselves in deep water as the latest case slips further away. Taylor pens a strong issue developing two mysteries at once. The art locks in on the impact of both eras being brought together. Detective Comics continues to impress with every issue.
