THE SENTRY #3 (MARVEL COMICS)

Robert Reynolds has faced many challenges but none as personal as this.

Normie, his longtime canine companion is dying. Reynolds is helpless to save him. While this is going on, the world faces The CRYSTALLINE PLAGUE. One person is taking advantage of Bob’s situation.

The Void has been making moves and Bob thinks he’s losing control of keeping him held back.

THE SENTRY #3 by Paul Jenkins, Christian Rosado, Matt Milla & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics) delivers its’ pen-ultimate chapter.

Let’s take a look at this highly emotional issue.

THE SENTRY #3 by Paul Jenkins, Christian Rosado, Matt Milla & Joe Caramagna (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Jenkins delivers a powerful farewell to Normie through the issue’s heartfelt word. Bob’s love and devotion to his canine companion is presented in a very strong manner. Even as the world is crashing down with the Plague, Bob’s attention is fully focused to Normie. The conversation with his wife Lindy conveys the sorrow they feel knowing what is coming. It is an unfortunately relatable scenario for anyone who’s ever lost someone they love.

Even with the interjection of Reed Richards into solving the plague, it falls short of Bob’s farewell to Normie. The writing is deeply emotional as Bob runs through many thoughts before the ultimate passing moment. It is matched equally by its’ aftermath. Showing this vulnerability opens up Bob to accepting what has happened. The ending speeds back into the superhero themes of the story. It leaves readers ready for the finale and face-off with the plague’s wrath once and for all.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Rosado & Milla present a tasteful depiction of losing a loved one for this chapter. The opening panels show the pain in Bobs face as he holds Normie close. His interaction with Hulk is brief but amplifies their unique friendship. Kingpin’s fall is a very different tone. The dark overtures pouring out of the panels echo’s the despair in the room. It serves as a break before Lindy and Bob have a difficult discussion. Their hurt resonates with the audience on such a deep level.

This advances further as Bob heads to the Pet Hospital. His expressions unlock the deep thoughts racing in his mind. Readers watch as the build leads into an exceptional page depicting Bob’s heartache in losing his beloved friend. This sequences is the issue’s most powerful pages. Rosado’s details to Bob’s tears slowly coming down his face will move readers. This leads right to the finish of the issue. Seeing Bob almost unleash the Void in his sadness, a final page snaps everything back to set up the final confrontation.

FINAL GRADE: 8.5

Robert Reynolds is dealt a devastating passing while the Void is poised to strike! Jenkins pens a deeply emotional tale of love and loss through the superhero backdrop. Rosado & Milla construct incredible images to depict Bob’s most personal moments. Even with great powers, a hero is never prepared for grief and loss.
