Lights, Camera, Odyssey?

Kyle Rayner’s current “partner” is drawing some attention along with his return to Sector 2814. The high price of fame is weighing in.

A trip to a plastic surgeon proves to be more than meets anyone’s eyes. Just another day in the office for an Emerald Warrior.

GREEN LANTERN #35 by Jeremy Adams, Ig Guara, Montos, Romulo Fajardo Jr., & Dave Sharpe sees Rayner take on Hollywood’s dark side.

Let’s take a closer look at what happens here.

GREEN LANTERN #34 by Jeremy Adams, Ig Guara, Montos, Romulo Fajardo Jr., & Dave Sharpe (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Adams plays into the weird aspect of fame with aliens getting plastic surgery to hide from the public. Rayner is finding out this world all too fast due to Odyssey. The dialogue is very trendy as she navigates the other side of showbiz. It is a far cry form Hal Jordan’s current plot. His latest space escapade locks in on some hijinx as he is deals with a set-up. While brief, it beaks up the “Hollywood” time.

Once that resumes the story goes back into the rigged backdrop of aliens in plain sight. The writing shows Rayner going after a fugitive. It carries a familiar tone in set-up. The aftermath steers events into a major discovery. It also allows Odyssey to sort through some emotions about changing looks. This helps cast the final act easier than expected. Rayner’s instincts get the best of him which allows for a dangerous reveal. A full page image wraps up the weirdness for this go around. Steady in its’ structure but not a game changer by any means.

Guara (Rayner) & Montos (Jordan) continue to split duties. The opening alien plastic surgery captures the creepiness of Dr. Skin. Following panels build out Odyssey’s trek into Hollywood. The frantic backstage keeps panels lively as she shifts gears. It resumes after the Jordan pages with Rayner taking Guara’s lead attention. Rayner’s mannerisms shift while investigating this alien hybrid situation. The art locks in on that point heading into the books final stages. The confrontation at Skin’s office dashes any hopes of normalcy. A full page welcomes in the first creature. It is followed up by another terrifying hybrid before the final page takes the prize. No buisness like showbiz eh?

Jordans’ portion is small but effective. A half panel of opposing guards kicks off the combat for this chapter. Events move pretty fast until one order is given that upends the original gameplan for one character. This leads into a fun Super Friends nod via near full page. The art here does its duty but is over and done with very fast.

FINAL GRADE: 8

Kyle Rayner is hating fame right now as lines are crossed! Adams lets both Green Lanterns highlight their plans of action. The art teams craft solid images in this fast-moving chapter. This one should have fans talking at the LCS!
