*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Adams crafts quite an amusing tale. Placing Kent in charge of this group is one that provides him difficulty. It doesn’t help matters that this group isn’t exactly ones that want to hear anyone say different than their plans. The group has a few noteworthy legacy ties to DCU heroes. Cheshire and Fair Play are the ones that stand out from the rest. Readers will get a chuckle out of Arsenal’s “chat” with Kent. The dialogue brings out the clumsiness of Superman’s well-being. Once a threat enters the atmosphere, the kids aren’t inclined to sit back and be calm. This is where the fun begins.
Readers watches as the kids head to Earth looking for trouble. It doesn’t take long for them to find it. They also get to witness a panic-stricken Kent plead for help in handling the kids. His person of choice is all too familiar with growing up with super hero parents. This leads to one of the books strongest moments. The writing brings out the ordeals surrounding growing up tough in the superhero landscape. This moves events into a solid action-filled closing. Readers are also gifted a surprise star that they won’t see coming. Once the smoke clears, the final image teases more is on the way involving this tale.
Mercer and Dalhouse usher in the new group with a full page image (with caption breakdown). It amplifies Donna Troy giving Kent his orders. Readers watch as there’s quite a few reactions to Kent’s chaperone duties, Cheshire is one that jumps. The unlikely bonding moment with Arsenal felt telegraphed . It was a shame considering Harper’s threat to Kent for failure. This also raises a question of how many heroes carry Kryptonite on them? That ill have to wait for another time.
Once the kids hit Earth, they enter via full page. They are matched by their opposition in the same manner. Readers might wonder why certain characters are opposing them. It is upstaged by Kent’s recruitment for help. The half image brings in a new player into the game. This allows the heroes to attempt saving the kids. Instead, Kent has a heart-to-heart with one of them. Emotions run high with expressions during this. It helps to refresh the action panels as the heroes finally are ready to battle. The surprise character joins the fray via near full page. Their addition spins into a solid landing space. A full image leaves its’ aftermath with appears to have more behind it them meets the eyes. Until that pay-off, a good landing spot in this tie-in to leave on.
FINAL GRADE: 8.2
Jon Kent goes from Superman to Super Chaperone as a group of children attempt to set into the DC K.O. chaos with this special. Adams throws a few looks into play with the writing. Mercer and Dalhouse level out the drama with solid action. The guest star is worth the price of admission alone but stay for the whole story. Check it out!
