The numbers are dwindling, but the stakes are getting higher.

Darkseid is coming. The heroes of the DCU know this won’t be an ordinary fight with the former Lord of Apokolips. He has leveled up. So must they.

They have entered into a tourney to become Absolute Champion. The prize is the Heart of Apokolips. It will not come easy. Those entered know sacrifice is involved. It has resulted with friends fighting friends. Allies turning into enemies. Dark Horses sneaking in to steal victory.

Now eight stand ready to advance. Only four will be left standing after this. All bets are off.

DC K.O. #3 by Scott Snyder, Joshua Williamson, Xermánico, Javier Fernández, Alejandro Sánchez & Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou heads into its’ championship rounds with this chapter.

Let’s take a deeper dive into the wild scenario at hand.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

This round of action is based on the concept of tag team combat. After Superman’s perfect vision of winning, the eight remaining fighters step into the next round. Snyder and Williamson play into the fun possibilities this series presents. Letting the eight select their partners of fallen champions leads to unique pairings. None more wilder than the villains left standing. The fact the Joker has made it this far is crazy enough. Seeing who he tags in is perfect insanity. It fits the overall theme this chapter brings.

Readers watch as some pairing make logical sense. Superman’s choice is one that pay dividends as the story progresses. The same can be said for Wonder Woman as well. The writing shows how these two see the long game involved with winning. The others provide fun match-ups that bring the Saturday Morning Cartoon energy. There are plenty of fan-favorite moments made on each page. Once in the clear, four are left standing. Heading into the final pages, the scenario turns very familiar. It leaves events on a place many fans have been waiting to see. Thee’s no way to walk away from this one not excited for what’s next.

Fernández, Xermánico (on interludes) & Sánchez craft fantatsic images throughout the book. Superman’s “utopia” has a magical feel when viewing. It gives more purpose for his valiant effort. The moment give way to the overall challenge forming next. A two page spread shows what the elite eight have in front of them. All involved are giving extra thought to their choices. The results let readers know who they feel are equals in fighting their way through this round. Expect some great debates forming here.

The tag teams are given a full page video game look. Once the rounds commence, each team has a fun sequence to explain their choices. Joker’s moves are worthy of a series of two-page spreads. For his opponent Zatanna and her choice, they immediately have to go on the defensive. This allows for a full page image to unveil the truth about his partner. As the chaos continues, there is a heavy helping of action on each page. The art lives up to the billing expected. Another two page spread involves Superman’s fight moving into a powerful play via full page. It gives a mic drop to the round while pushing forward. The end result is a dire situation which readers know all too well. This results in a final page many have been waiting for. A perfect parting image to leave fans wanting more. Excellent work.

FINAL POINT: 9.5

Heavy is the fight for the crown of Absolute Champion in this latest chapter of DC’s premier event. Snyder and Williamson tap into the beautiful madness of this tourney for an exceptional third round. The art team brings the action with stunning art at every turn. Just wait till that last page hits…..you can’t afford to miss this!
