Credit: Marvel Comics // The Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #4 by J. Michael Straczynski (Writer), Pere Perez (Artist), Guru e-FX (Color Artist), VC’s Joe Caramanga (Letterer), Humberto Ramos & Edgar Delgado (Cover Artists) is a compelling issue that sets up for an explosive finale!
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
The Story
The issue is interesting, because it feels like the calm before the storm. Or perhaps the penultimate episode of your favorite television show before the season finale. It starts off simply enough, but however by the end of the issue things are going full tilt to their explosive finale.
Things start off with a look at how things are going for Peter right now, and it’s not good. Not that Peter ever really has a great grasp on balancing his personal life with his superhero one, but he really is struggling right now. It’s a great look into a time that once was for Peter that we really don’t get to see anymore. Unless Marvel decides to rescind Peter’s degrees in a future story, we won’t see him in this environment anytime soon.
The other side of the story is of course focusing on Evangeline and her new abilities, while also getting a lesson on her role in this mysterious entities plans. It’s the usual stuff you’d expect, but given the old school feel this series has been going for it works.
Ultimately those two sides come colliding together setting up what’s sure to be an explosive finale for the series. It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out in the finale, since we know what’s ultimately going to happen to the major characters but there is sure to be some surprises that come out of the finale.
The Artwork
Pere Perez & Guru e-FX continue to impress with the art in this issue, and continue to give it a modern look but still maintain a classic feel that you’d get from reading a story set during Peter’s college days. The panels with Harry & Peter particularly stood out to me in just how good they looked.
FINAL POINT: It’s a solid issue that has some heartfelt moments that fans are sure to enjoy, and the artwork is spectacular. It’s great setup for what’s sure to be great finale.
Overall Grade: 7.5/10
