BLACK PANTHER: INTERGALACTIC #2 by Victor LaValle, Stefano Nesi, Bryan Valenza & Ariana Maher (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

LaValle is taking T’Challa completely out of his comfort zone. The result is a mixed vision of sci-fi and super-heroics. Dealing with a cloned version of Dr. Octopus is the least of his worries. The writing pushes him until finding answers to this unique problem. Meanwhile, other characters are getting their fair share of plot time. M’Baku’s dialogue with “T’Challa” spins from genuine happiness to the gravity of their current situation. Readers can sense the tension forming while the ruse keeps its facade up.

Princess Shuri breaks up events to dive further into the mystery unfolding. Her banter with Femi hits its key points before segwaying into a more fantasy aspect. This proves to be one of the stronger areas of this story. Their path is stopped by a new version of a familiar face. It completements where the real T’Challa fights. There is an overwhelming sense of danger to the delusional conflict he is facing. This only becomes greater as the final pages start. Things go bad to worse in a hurry. Judging by the last page, readers haven’t even scratched the surface on where this leads.

Nesi and Valenza open with a recap of events stemming from Imperial. This quickly swings back to the present. The Dr. Octopus clone is granted a near full page image. It leads to a few awkward moments before centering back to M’Baku and the fake Panther. The images here cover much ground as times have changed for both. There is no escaping the anger felt because of the past. It moves forward with a close-up of fake T’Challa dropping a chilling line.

Once events go to Shuri and Femi, the images add more strength to the rising drama. Anyone waiting for action doesn’t wait for long. T’Challa’s escape from Fake Octopus starts a run of solid action panels. hey lead into a full debut of another clone villain sure to catch attention. As the story jumps to the closing pages, the art doubles down on the weirdness to the scenario. There is some outrageous sites thrown into the mix. Seeing T’Challa walk around with a severed artificial head is something. It doesn’t even shock as much as the last page. The full image drives home the danger as the stakes keep rising.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

T’Challa’s off-world escapades continue to leave a notable impression in the latest chapter. LaValle swings big with the cat and mouse game of the Panthers in the writing. Nesi and Valenza construct some wild visuals to mirror the imaginative story commencing. This is definitively not your average Black Panther story and one you shouldn’t miss!
