BLACK PANTHER: INTERGALACTIC #1 by Victor LaValle, Stefano Nesi, Bryan Valenza & Ariana Maher (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

LaValle puts T’Challa in a whole new environment with fresh new conflicts. The opening sequence shows how he deals with an alien threat. This becomes the tip of a fast moving iceberg. The writing shows how he is maneuvering on a new planet with mounting questions. His survival instincts kick in to keep him a step ahead. This proves vital when he comes across a pair of familiar characters. This skirmish unveils more problems in plain site. The same issues appear to head Shuri’s way.

Readers watch as she runs into M’Baku, who’s recovering from injuries sustained in Imperial. Their conversation is very business. It throws more emphasis on finding T’Challa beofre things get out of control. This moves her journey to another portion of Wakanda-Prime. Another story comes into focus with T’Challa coming back to bury B’Wete. The dialogue is heartfelt as the King recognizes his grave loss. Both stories run together by the time the closing starts. There are plenty of surprises ushers in before the chapter wraps. None might be more puzzling than the final image. A mystery is brewing. Plan for its’ impact.

MORE FROM COSMIC MARVEL!

Nesi and Valenza play into the fantasy aspect of space with the opening sequence. The monster snake gets a near full page image. Their encounter is brief but nails its’ key points home. This gives way for a tense meeting of Shuri and M’Baku. Shuri’s facial reactions are very angry and frustrated. There is never a loss of determination happening as she tries tracking her brother down. These panels drive home the importance of finding him. However, his current situation is more complicated.

Readers watch a fantastic full page image of Panther running from T-Rexes. It brings out more notable Marvel characters that want to defend their turf. The fight between him and a certain “savage” resident” moves swiftly with great action panels. It’s aftermath wraps up with a great image of Panther assessing what is going on. This moves events into the final pages. None make more of an impact like the last image. A full shot of a character turns everything upside down. How this all plays out is anyone’s guess.

FINAL GRADE: 8.6

T’Challa’s latest adventure puts him in the direct line of danger, wherever that may be. LaValle’s writing keeps readers on the edge of their seats. Nesi and Valenza craft impressive visuals combining tones of Earth and Space. A new dynamic is put in place that will have readers locked in for the long haul.
