X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE #3 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, and Richard Starkings(Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Loeb plays off the various eras for an entertaining trip. The initial landing spot of the Savage Land causes a famous love triangle to come into conflict one more time. This version doesn’t know each other though. It’s a fun wrinkle into the standard DNA of Rogue and Gambit. As the action starts, the dialogue tires making peace in the conflict. Gambit’s pleas to his old “friends” fall on deaf ears. Eventually cooler heads prevail but not before more action.
Ka-Zar’s pleas to move locations lead to an unsettling breaking point. Nether side feels like working together. Their dialogue shows much bravado as they try tracking down a common enemy. As events move forward, the narration shows the difficulties in stopping the threat. It comes with a heavy cost. Readers watch as the target is handled in a gruesome way. The ends justify the means to a degree. It also leads into a quick ending that ties up events with no issues. The closing comes with an even deeper nod to the past. How this era will go is anyone’s guess.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!
Di Meo kicks off events with a gorgeous two page spread of the action heating up. From here, it’s full speed ahead as the showdown starts. The panels flood with the emotions to win at all costs. Wolverine’s attack on Forge doesn’t pull punches. In-between, the panels lock in on AoA memories as everyone tries making sense of events. Readers shouldn’t worry about the cmbat slowing here. A full page image of Sabretooth facing off with Zabu is epic in all it’s presentation.
Another two page splash shows the ground give way on Rogue and Gambit. The sideways shot connects with readers on the freefall. Once the team meets, tempers are at a breaking point. The team’s reactions to planning lead to a rift again between squads. After the issue is handled, there are some close-ups of ever present glances from Rogue and Gambit. This gets upended by Nate Grey. Readers watch the truth of the 616 Rogue come into play. This sets Gambit on a new course, one that makes things more complex to the grand scheme. The parting panel is a new look at a past era that is sure to shock the course.
FINAL GRADE: 8.5
The XoA head into the Savage Land with more questions than answers in this latest salvo. Loeb throws new looks at the classic lore with the writing. Di Meo’s art absolutely perfect for this series. This story is a must have for the X-Men fans of any era.
