Let’s take a closer look to where events land now.

X-MEN OF APOCALYPSE #2 by Jeph Loeb, Simone Di Meo, and Richard Starkings (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Loeb continues to dabble into the vintage X-lore to bring out the contrasts between both teams. The opening sequence is classic X-Men awkwardness when Jean Grey arrives at the door. This changes rapidly when the AoA team crashes the front door. It doesn’t take long for the action to swing into high gear. Readers will enjoy the brawling as the match-ups are nothing short of entertaining. One stands out above the rest.

Nate Grey meeting Jean Grey lives up to its’ billing. Both telepathic heavyweights clash early. However, Nate meets an unexpected party that changes everything. Readers know this party all too well. Their dialogue matches the sinister motives associated with the powerful being. It results in a change of course for all involved. The fallout shakes up the group even more than before. The last pages will have fans talking. Let’s hit the time wrap again!

DeMeo’s art has been a key factor in this series success. The vintage lookback captures the innocence of the original era. It is shaken up by a fantastic two page splash of the AoA team at the front door. Readers don’t wait long for the action to ramp up. From Sabretooth in the Danger Room to Iceman taking on Gambit, there are plenty of amazing images to ensnare the audiences’ attention. As eluded to before, one pairing steals the show.

Nate Grey’s run-in with Jean starts with a cautious start. Their expressions are unsure of how this is going to go. An incredible two page splash welcomes the other party into their meeting. Seeing how Nate Grey processes events leads to some genuine uncertainty. His opposition is more comfortable with the information unlocked. Her eyes tell a story as the final pages creep up on the issue. Readers watch as more time periods are presented. The final page displays a moment in time that is a lock to have fans talking. Another stellar visual experience.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

A trek into the past leads to an unexpected change in plans for the AoA X-Men in this exciting chapter. Loeb’s writing takes fans back to classic eras with high results. DeMeo’s art is simply stunning on each page. It is perfect for the clashes of styles and egos. A perfect throwback to an era gone but never forgotten.
