The Story

We’re now into part 4 of the 9 part Death Spiral story being told and I have no clue where the story is going to end up! That’s not to say it’s directionless or a bad thing, but that the creative team is building up to something that’s sure to be explosive and a major changing point for the various pieces inside this puzzle. You don’t get Spider-Man, Venom AND Carnage together and have it all work out comfortably and end with a picnic in Central Park.

This issue is a very interesting look at Eddie Brock/Carnage and a look into what his motivations are with his recent actions. It was interesting for me to read, because I’m not super familiar with all of Eddie’s backstory so to see what we do in this issue gave some interesting depth to the character for me. Eddie’s in such an interesting place in this story because he’s still trying to find his footing while dealing with his new relationship with Carnage. It all works together really well and brings together what we’ve seen so far to a focus and add some depth to the overall story being told.

The ending is a wild one that I did not see coming, but once I read it I realized that it does make sense given who it is we’re dealing with. Putting together such volatile forces like Peter, Mary Jane & Eddie as they presently are was never going to work out smoothly, and it was only a question of when something was going to go south and not if something would go south. It will be interesting to see how this shakes things up, and thankfully we don’t have to wait long to see what happens because part 5 is NEXT WEEK!

The Artwork

Jesus Saiz is the guest artist for this issue and together with Matt Hollingsworth they do a stellar job with the artwork for this issue! I liked how detailed everything was and the different look Jesus was able to give the issue. I particularly liked the sequences with Carnage and the way he was drawn in them, it just feels chaotic and constantly on the edge. I would definitely love to see Jesus Saiz do artwork for Amazing Spider-Man again sometime!

Overall Grade: 9.5/10

This is another fantastic issue in the series that continues to build to the hype up for Death Spiral. Charles Soule & Joe Kelly deliver an incredible story that will leave you wanting more! Together with some incredible artwork, this is an issue that should be incredibly high up on your reading list!
