WOLVERINE: WEAPONS OF ARMAGEDDON #3 by Chip Zdarsky, Luca Maresca, Jesus Aburtov & Joe Sabino (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky devotes a great deal of time getting Colton’s story pushed to the forefront. The past at PRIMEWARRIOR lends itself to put Colton in the shoes of Steve Rogers. His words mimic much of the good natured optimism involved with the role. This is a far cry form the present day chaos. Nuke’s attack on the cabin is brutal and unapologetic. Readers watch as Colton matches extremes knowing survival is at stake. It builds up a great pace before switching gears back to the past.

The first mission of Colton doesn’t go without its’ own issues. His inexperience shines as he’s trying to capture his target. This also leads into the dark truth who made him. Readers watch as a crushing death opens up a Pandora’s box of secrets best left closed. Colton’s reactions are mixed but this pushes him to where fans first saw him in he Captain America series. Once back in present, the dialogue with Logan and Colton is all business. It reflects their solider mentality as they head into battle. This builds uo to a fitting landing spot to set up what can only be an explosive finale. Anything less is a failure.

Maresca and Aburtov handle the action with relative ease in this chapter. When they dive into the expressions aspect, their panels have a greater impact. Locking in on Colton’s hope assists in making his back story more impactful. Once on his first mission, the severity of the task jumps out on panels. There’s a fair share of action involved here. Once a comrade falls, Colton’s demeanor changes. It’s matched with an epic panel of him stopping a prop plane nose first. This moves towards a tragic full page with his fallen friend. Its’ epilogue hints at his future while not revealing all its’ cards.

As for present day, the panels are bursting with loud action. There’s never a shortage of intensity in these pages. Even when the bullets stop, Logan’s presence creates an uneasy setting when around Colton. This is amplified when their discussion starts up. Logan’s cold reactions are fitting to who he is and where he leads. This gets capped off at the very end of the book. Their arrival at PRIMEWARRIOR is greeted with some unexpected visitors. One of which is granted a full page to set up the oncoming fight. A steady issue visually to follow.

FINAL GRADE: 8.2

The hunt for answers leads Logan and David Colton to an unexpected backdrop as their mystery becomes more clear. Zdarsky gives much depth to Colton’s involvement with the writing. The art delivers on the strong action expected for this series. Brace for impact because this finale is going to be nothing but fireworks!
