*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Zdarsky jumps around between flashbacks of Nuke’s failed start in the super solider program and his present day merc work. The past pages show the cruel circumstances the program brings. Readers watch as Logan is the only one showing any form of compassion in these moments. It moves Nuke into an early struggle to reclaim a purpose. Between a fight with a grizzly bear and his broken mindset, the time establishes the damage done body and soul.

The other half of the book revolves around David Colton and Logan. Their interactions spins into a chaotic free-for-all until cooler heads prevail. Once the bullets stop, the talk becomes more grounded into the situations at hand. Colton’s a mystery into himself. Adding him into play makes for another example of the failed side of covert action in the MCU. Both characters carry heavy scars. This shows their pain off to the audience with no punches pulled. The search for Tyler is shown briefly before the closing act takes over. The pages deliver a violent finish with more secrets to be unlocked. An uneven pace but steady when sticking to the main points.

As for the art, Maresca and Aburtov keep the uneasy feel of the shady experiments front and center in the opening. Simpson’s unconscious body in the tank sends a loud message. Logans’ cold remorse echoes his own horrible past. It moves into a quick fight with the passing grizzly bear. The aftermath shows Simpson’s cracked conscious prime for more terrible work. Its’ counterpart follows along the same guidelines.

Colton’s initial interactions with Logan come off with an explosive flare. The panels mirror the fast action between trained killers. Its’ pacing moves events to a breaking point. The end result leaves both in a more paused state. Readers see their uncomfortable conversation open up deep wounds. This especially hits when Tyler, the missing mutant, is mentioned. Logan’s reactions open up more as he processes the information. It leads into another action sequence to wrap up events. Readers looking for action get their money’ worth in this ending act.

FINAL GRADE: 7.8

Logan’s hunt for a missing mutant puts him into uncharted territory as the walls of a conspiracy close in. Zdarsky jumps around timelines to connect the three main players. Once it settles in place, the story finds its base. The art brings on big action when needed. This one connects the dots while leaving room to grow.
