UNCANNY X-MEN #34 by Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics) continues “Wild Ride”

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds now.

UNCANNY X-MEN #33 by Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

One thing that Simone has shown is she’s not afraid to take the X-Men into uncomfortable territory. In dealing with the supernatural and exorcisms, much can go wrong. For this story, it is very organic of how it fits. Rogue and Gambit’s opening teases another theme from a past arc. It doesn’t take long for Gambit to address this when dealing with Wyvern . Having the demon twist emotions puts Remy in a very bad place. The writing tampers with his emotion state until a save comes in from Rogue. Their banter is perfect as the devotion shown becomes their strength. It leads to a steady finish for their portion, teasing something greater next go around.

As for the rest of the X-Men, the time at Haven House moves forward. A disturbance in the farm leads to a shocking discovering. The writing sees the X-Men handle the situation with an unlikely lead taking control. M’s reaction to the discovered mutant is caring and welcoming. It is something that the outsider desperately needs. Once the story progresses further, more discoveries are made. It plants the seeds for a far greater threat which the team is more than ready to take on.

read last issue’s review!

Vecchio begins with full shots of Rogue and Gambit in separate chambers. The weight of their situation looms heavily on their minds. This pushes Gambit into transforming as he confronts a shadowy figure via full page. Once revealed, a state of shock goes over Gambit. It leads to more questions before being interrupted by a true nightmare. The full page visual shows a terrifying reality sinking in. It’s a combination of many fears. Readers watch as great action panels take hold. Rogue’s appearance gives events a spark while letting her tear loose. It moves their story to a wild (no pun) closing page. The full page shows more horrors awaiting the cursed pair as they search for answers.

The Haven House moments are more traditional in the sense of X-Men downtime. A half panel shows a simple sparring session. It moves into a more serious place with the discovery inside the barn. The full page shot welcomes M to the conflict. Her reactions throw a great curve into play. Using compassion as her weapon, M handles the moment with grace. The half panel “hug shot” cements this placement as impactful. This leads to more starling pieces with a great send-off shot. A single tear coming down Jubilee’s face speaks volumes for where this situation will be heading.

FINAL GRADE: 8.4

Gambit’s latest attempt to rid his curse becomes all too complicated in another great issue! Simone teases some future moments while pushing into the supernatural present. Vecchio and Wilson shine with the action panels and more personal looks. The team on UXM never fails on bringing out the best of the X-Men every time!
