Let’s take a look at this initial starting point.

Simone takes the X-Men in to much darker territory for this arc. Reaching into the Marvel tombs for Gabriel, the Devil Hunter is a nice addition to the troubles of Gambit. The writing shows Rogue’s worry as her husband is slowly fading away. It never escapes readers minds on how grave the stakes ae. Add in a few more revelations and this portion of the book starts making its’ dark decent.
Where the issue really gains steam is the new stat quo for the Outliers. Having M and Quicksilver watch the team proves for a clashing of styles. Both new leaders are not known for their patience and courtesy. This shows during the first exercise. The writing brings to the front Calico’s hurt of not having Gambit to lean on. Their growing bond has helped this team make their ascension. Simone weaves in more threads as the team’s exercise crashes and burns. This moves events into the closing act where more haunting words send the power X-Couple next. It’s a great tease for what’s sure to be another classic adventure.

Vecchio returns to art duties after a brief hiatus. The opening pages tease the sinister evil lurking. It is upended by a fantastic full page image of Rogue and Gambit entering the scene. Panels start filling with more viciousness of Gambit’s curse. A half page vision puts a dire image into readers’ heads as the story makes a subtle transition back to Louisiana. Once here, the story takes a more traditional turn, but not one without personality clashes.
M’s “breakfast order” falls flat as she quickly learns Haven House is self serve. This allows Quicksilver to try assisting a somber Calico. Their panels show the young mutant struggling without her mentor leading the way. Her emotions boil over into some destructive actions as a team drill commences. This leads into the more eye-catching closing act. Panels fill with dark imagery as the curse’s lasting effect is teased for the audience. It leads to a few eyebrow raising images before closing in on Gabriel’s words of warning. A great visual trip into some difficult territory for the mighty mutants.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
Gambit’s running out of time as his curse now requires some supernatural help! Simone’s writing showcases the impact of new leaders trying to guide the next generation.. The art delivers on presenting the chilling truths of Gambit’s case with strong art. This story has a new aura looming around it that readers won’t want to miss.
