UNCANNY X-MEN #28 by Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Simone does a fantastic job balancing all the wild storylines happening here. The opening pages focus on Scurvy’s death. Ellis’ words are direct and don’t pull back. The way she describes their time hints at some remorse. It sets up the deadly fallout on a great point. The writing shows why she was scared as reality has welcomed certain danger to her doorstep. This escalates as the book goes on right to the finish. Solid cliffhanger to conclude a wild ride with.
The other aspects of the issue shine as well. Simone weaves the Outlier’s plot as a group finding themselves. Action picks up events as Mutina starts putting together the crooked puzzle. Readers will see the lengths the group goes to save a fallen member. This escalates even higher as a reveal kicks down one door. Gambit’s time with his curse also ushers in more danger as patience runs thin with the former students. Overall, there’s plenty of excellent drama happening with this issue.

Vecchio and Wilson lead with the Scurvy fallout. Ellis’ stone reactions fall back to the half panel of happier times for Phillip. Once his body passes away, the panels pour with dread as Ellis’ grip on the prisoners is gone. The captives looks of revolt fill an entire page. This launches into a bloody secret exposed. The full page panel welcomes a secretive Mutant into the room. This changes the course of Ellis’ time before passing attention to the Outliers.
The dueling group shots lead into a fast-paced ordeal with the Outliers. Readers watch as events get emotional as the young heroes start adapting to the combat. An epic group image is given a proper full shot as Deathdream takes over attacks. This breaks for a moment to allow Ellis’ time to have a guest crash her confrontation via full page.
As Rogue’s team jumps into fray, this starts up more frantic action. Readers will zone in on all the moving parts here. No one gets lost in the shuffle as things progress. Events pause a great parting panel which teases more excitement is en route.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Corina Ellis’ worst nightmare comes true as her hold over Graymalkin crashes down around her. Simone pens an incredible issue filled with heavy drama. Vecchio and Wilson deliver on huge action as the conflicting storylines are about ready to explode. Uncanny X-Men continues to set the benchmark for what X-Men storytelling is all about!
