STORY OVERVIEW:

Akeldama is locked up in the IPPF Correctional Community and is treated like the most dangerous prisoner they have. This is the same cell and security that Desmiox was locked up in, which gives Akeldama a slight advantage. She is writing her plans to escape as well as her story underneath the bed in the cell. After gaining a guard’s trust and getting all of her ducks in a row, Akeldama decides to make her escape. As she tries to escape the prison, will she be successful or will she end up back in the cell?

WRITING:

This issue is really inventive and finds a cool way to tell Akeldama’s imprisonment and escape attempt story. Benito Cereno takes a different approach to telling us this issues story. Telling it through mostly narration that is actually writing under a bed is original and a cool way to let us know what happened with our hero. The escape attempt is well thought out and takes the reader on a further journey. Telling the story in this manner helps Cereno take the reader on a different kind of ride with alternate views of what’s happening. The originality of this storytelling in this issue really draws you in and allows you to be lost in this story.

ARTWORK:

Blood & Thunder continues to shine thanks to E.J. Su’s detailed, imaginative art, which brings its worlds and characters to life. In this issue, his visuals sharpen the drama and keep the action easy to follow. Msassyk’s bold colors elevate the mood, enriching both the atmosphere and the story’s emotional beats. As always, the art team delivers.

Final Thoughts:

Blood & Thunder #13 brings an inventive and effective way of telling this part of the story. The journey we go on with Akeldama as she has been incarcerated is a nice touch to bridge us to the next part of the story. This inventive style makes the story even more easily digestible and also easier for new readers to jump in. With that being said, if you were on the fence about this series before this is a perfect issue to grab at the shop and get into it.

FINAL GRADE: 9.4/10
