UNCANNY X-MEN #27 by Gail Simone, Luciano Vecchio, Matt Wilson & Clayton Cowles (Marvel Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Simone heads back to Graymalkin Prison to show a dire situation unfolding. Corina Ellis’ manipulations of Scurvy have taken a deadly toll. The writing shows the dying man’s warnings fall on deaf ears. There is a great deal of pain in his voice as he expresses his last words. Ellis remains defiant in the face of all of this. The moment fades into the past where new residents take up studies at Xavier’s school. This sequence comes across with a classic feel fitting for the young heroes trying to find their way.

Readers watch as they are thrown into the Danger Room. Events allow the heroes to sort through working together while attempting to understand the room itself. Mutina continues to shine in this role. Her dialogue is spot on for being offensive in dealing with their challenge. It provides a small sense of internal conflict before moments shift gears. Gambit’s deal with Vig gives readers a small fill on his growing sub-plot. The portion compliments the overall chaos brewing. This is heightened even more when Have House has other residents arrive. The writing stages the awkwardness perfectly to let the final page sink in. Between both young teams, the game of smoke and mirrors is very strong. Readers are going to really enjoy this one.

READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!

Vecchio and Wilson open with the dismal state of Scurvy as Ellis taunts him. The panels reflect her cold nature as Peter laments his efforts to help her. Readers watch as the suffering he put himself through was all for nothing. This leaves a bitter feeling as events shift to the past of the New Mutants. Panels begin to have some lighter sense as the kids get ready for class. The introduction to the Danger Room goes off as one would expect. The near full shot of Devil Dinosaur sets a nice pace for this sequence.

Panels flood with action as they showcase their teamwork. It leads into a more dangerous affair involving twisted villains. The art brings out the horror with a near full page shot. Readers watch as the team wastes no motions in getting down to business. There’s another great display of combat before events stop on a dime. A bold full page shows their next opposition which raises a few eyebrows. This complicates the finish even more. The final pages throw everything off course. Events close with a huge closing panel that sets a new course of direction.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The “New Mutants” get an old school education about being X-Men in another excellent chapter ! Simone’s writing taps into the classic X-Men lore and twists ideas into something unique and special. Vecchio and Wilson deliver on huge action and more surprises! If you’re an X-Men fan, this run has to be in your collection!
