ULTIMATE WOLVERINE #12 by Chris Condon, Alessandro Cappuccio, Bryan Valenza & Cory Petit (Marvel Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Condon unleashes a side of Logan fans know all too well. Knowing who killed the people that saved him, the mood is intense and focused as it gets. Once on the scene, the body count begins. Dr. Prostovich has a protector ready but Logan is on a whole other level here. He disposes of this sentinel with a statement kill. Readers can only sit back and feel the rage pour off the pages. This leads into a more surprise direction. The mission isn’t all about avenging.
Once Logan discovers who’s the voice calling to him, the dynamic changes. This payoff delivers to set up the main event. One player is taken off the board, leaving the showdown fans want. The writing doesn’t miss on hitting the key points. It is as brutal as it needs to be. Just when events look to be going one way, another twist is thrown in with deadly consequences. The fallout ushers in new phases as an empire burns. Watching Logan emerge to a more familiar tone closes up events with a future uncertain. Just the way it should be for the walking weapon.
MORE FROM THE ULTIMATE UNIVERSE!
The art leans into the darker feel of what’s about to happen. Opening with Logan jumping out of a Sentinel is picture perfect. The near full page image of him crashing through the window sets up his rage-fueled attack. His battle with Prostovich’s protector is fast and unapologetic. It ends in a way that it only could. Having Wolvie stab through the optic beam generator is sure to be a fan favorite image .
This leads into a darker portion of the issue. Freeing the “Phoenix Specimen” opens up repressed emotions. The panels are brief before this is intruded on by the Rasputins. As this fight commences, readers can feel each blow being connected. The art gives large panels to drive the action to a breaking point. This gets compiling momentum until another full image ends the fight in dramatic flare. Readers know what this all entails. It also helps move the story to a calm closing. The final pages tie up loose ends while leaving a sliver of hope for the future. Very solid ending to a complex lead.
FINAL GRADE: 9
Logan’s revenge knows no bounds as he takes the fight to the Eurasian Republic in a wild arc conclusion. Condon unleashes Wolverine onto his targets with a bold take. The art presents the fury in dramatic fashion. This is the definition of what you want to see in a Wolverine story.
