The Ultimates #19 (Marvel Comics)

Hello there! Padawan J here, the resident Star Wars expert from the ODPH! This week I'm going to be reviewing the 19th issue of The Ultimates from Marvel Comics!

Everything in the new Ultimate universe has been building to this point! For months it’s been teased that The Maker is returning and that moment is finally here! So have our heroes of Earth 6160 done enough to get ready? Let’s jump into it! NOTE: While not required, you should read this issue AFTER you read Ultimate Endgame #1.

Credit: Marvel Comics // The Ultimates #19 by Deniz Camp (Writer), Juan Frigeri (Artist), Federico Blee & Edgar Delgado (Color Artist), VC’s Travis Lanham (Letterer), Dike Ruan & Neeraj Menon (Cover) is a great companion piece to Ultimate Endgame, but also stands on it’s own in a great issue.

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The Story

As I mentioned before it isn’t required reading, but I recommend reading Ultimate Endgame #1 before you read this issue. There’s some set up and the proverbial powder keg exploding that you’ll miss out on and might be slightly confused on. It’s still a tremendous story that really had me guessing right up until the end of the issue.

The issue takes place at the same time as the events of Ultimate Endgame do, and it really is a story filled with heart and emotion. The issue focuses on Janet Van Dyne & Hank Pym. It goes back & forth between the battle taking place and how Janet came to be in the position she’s in.

I really enjoyed the flashback portion of the story because it really shows a side of Janet readers might not be used to. It also works really well with the present day story and how they play back and forth between one another. And it all builds up spectacularly to the end of the issue, which is SURE to have everyone talking.

Like I said in my review for Ultimate Endgame #1, just when you think you have things figured out, Deniz Camp changes the script. This change is sure to change things, and throw a very interesting monkey wrench into things with the battle against The Maker. Just where does it lead? I don’t know, but I can’t wait to see!

The Artwork

Juan Frigeri, Federico Blee & Edgar Delgado really did a great job with the artwork. Of course you have the style and look you’re used to consistent throughout the issue. There’s also the great job they did with the art between the past & present. It looks the same on a first read, but once you look closer you can see some subtle differences between the two. They really are a fantastic trio that work incredibly well together.

FINAL POINT: A heartfelt issue with a twist at the end that’s sure to have people talking. It’s a twist that adds an incredible wrinkle to things for the Ultimate Universe. Together with tremendous artwork, this issue should be right up there on your reading list this week.

Overall Grade: 9/10
