*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Soule throws a few different looks at the audience with this chapter. Rake’s night out with Onion Screw plays into her struggle with the status her success has led to. The writing shows Rake out of her element as life is moving fast. One piece of information tips her off of danger lying ahead. It results in an unanswered phone call to Collar. His planning takes a more cautious turn. Knowing the heat is on (no pun intended), there’s a high level on uncertainty in his actions.
Once the story switches to Starr and Cameron, Soule peels back layers of each personality. The more impactful one is Starr. Her rejection of family beliefs leads to a hostile interaction. It plays into Rake’s influence taking a deeper hold. In comparison, Cameron lets loose on a philosophical rant. Readers watch as his message strikes a few nerves into a shocking conclusion. Both build into more complexity for the Devils to juggle. Sandpaper Pinch makes a bold debut. Pinch is filled with anger and violence leading into the shocking last page. What a devious web is weaved here.
Browne and Knipstein open up with Club Burning Sensation. The scene is exactly what you would suspect being a nightclub in Hell. Onion Screw’s partying leads to a guest arriving with advice. Lube Libido makes an entrance via a half page image and coloring that pops. The attention to detail within these panels in incredible. It helps move the story to Collar’s scheming. The full page entrance leads to a balance of worry and hurt feelings before taking another big swing.
Starr’s time in the issue is a stand-out moment. While brief, Browne covers a wide range of emotions. The fight with her family is dramatic and boiling with disillusion. Cameron’s time is more reserved save for a few pages. His big omission comes with a stellar full page image. Watching his speech crash and burns turns into a spiral. A shocking action explodes on the page to conclude this portion. The closing act welcomes the latest character into the mix. Readers watch as Pinch’s work is on full display with no apologies. It spills into a full final page that will have readers talking. Another fantastic job to witness.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Rake and Collar start feeling the pressure of their scheming. Soule’s writing leans into the ripple effect of their revolutionary plans. Browne’s visuals are amazing as ever, bringing this dark world to new heights. A devilish good time on each page.
