Two groups of survivors are pawns in a much larger game.

Walter and Max have been using the groups to see who is worthy of living through the world’s end, Both groups have their own unique personalities. When they find out about the other, the dark side of humanity comes out.

This has led to Max intervening, but where is Walter in all of this?

Tynion opens with Arturo setting up the flashback sequence through the wasteland. The dialogue is hopeful as he converses with Sam about Walter’s offer. There is a sense of blind trust looming in the air. It is fitting for the mysterious figure. Event jump to Sarah’s request to join the cabin group. While subtle, the picture becomes more clear of danger brewing. The camcorder shots show how fast events turn to start this facade.

The moments that jump out most in this issue involve Max. The arrogance involved with talking to Norah and Walter’s group pushes to extreme levels. None are more a defining moment than what happens with Victor. The one is cold as Max pits him against Norah concerning who survives the game. It results in a shocking and brutal display. Readers can feel the uneasiness follow as Max continues to take actions. This builds to a fever pitch fueled by rage and frustrations. It results in a challenging set-up for the finish. Tynion bows out with a great twist that shakes up more in the dangerous game played.

Bueno and Bellaire display Arturo’s flashback with optimism of time with Sam. The two page spread shows the pair conversing over Walter’s invite. It helps build up the up Sarah’s trek to the cabin. The use of security camera panels adds another aspect of horror to what’s unfolding. Seeing how the cameras get scrambled is a perfect way to build into the consequences of where the groups are now.

Max’s stand-off with Norah is filled with brooding feelings. There’s no shortage of anger in these panels. Readers bear witness to how Max pushes the groups into direct conflict. The reactions of Victor and Norah lead into a heated reality. The verdict is a vicious display that will haunt readers. It continues forth as Max’s mannerism never break, The cold demeaner pushes forward while chaos ensues, This sets up the final pages with a solid swerve. The full image of said character changes everything as events near its’ endgame.

FINAL GRADE: 9.7

The end nears closer as Max plays a higher power to both groups in this intense chapter. Tynion unloads on the gravity of survival with the writing. Bueno and Bellaire take things to extreme levels with the art. Another excellent display in storytelling.
