*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
One thing is for certain with this chapter: Martin Stein is NOT a good man. Lemire dives heavily into his story after a much needed intervention takes place. The Justice League has arrived to confront their (now former) ally. Their best efforts fall flat of success. It is a powerful display to anyone doubting the capabilities of the Nuclear man. Rest assured, there is a reason why he is considered a “god” in some eyes.
The first pair to validate that is Stein’s. His testimony to congress is chilling in his devotion to the idea of Firestorm. It does carry the unfortunate emotions connected with losing a child. Seeing his heartbreaking recall of his son’s death will connect with readers. This turns quickly into a blind obsession into creating a walking weapon. His manipulations of Ronnie Raymond are deplorable. This comes more to fruition with Firehawk’s hunt for Stein. The vision of Stein sours with every page turn. This moves events to the chilling close. Excellent script for this issue.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
De Latorre & Maiolo lead with the JL trying to subdue Firestorm. Action panels come fast as the Nuclear Man handles all oncoming acts. The manner in which Martina Manhunter and Green Lantern are stopped is devious in nature. It leads to a full page shot of the victor celebrating the win. Once events head back to Washington for a flashback, Stein’s reactions cover a wide range. Readers see him go from stern scientist to devastated parent. It helps add some depth to his character before more secrets are revealed.
Firehawk’s time with Jason Roush is a solid break from the heavy overall scheme. It provides a pivot point to more flashbacks. In this case, the turn of Stein’s soul becomes apparent. Behind a devilish grin is a man convinced he is the answer. This leads to a present day discover of the professor. The panel show his fractured mind as he unloads on the truth about Raymond. It leads into a solid closing act. The final full page leaves no question on how fast things go from bad to worse. Great departing spot.
FINAL GRADE: 9.2
The sins of Martin Stein come to light in a troubling manner as Firestorm continues his rampage. Lemire locks in on the psychological aspect of Stein’s schemes via the writing . De Latorre & Maiolo balance out the heavy drama with excellent action moments. An ever-evolving saga that keeps readers guessing at every turn!
