Anytime Jackson Crater is given an ample amount of page time, it’s a sure bet to win. Factor that into the long building tension involving Basil and Katja, readers have much to savor here. The slow building tensions with the estranged couple come to a major head. Katja’s rage can’t be denied in the opening panels. Hora Ha’Neel has been deceptive in her nature behind the scenes. This all comes to an emotional & destructive head.

Hora’s beliefs cause a greater wedge into the team than ever imagined. Readers watch as Katja’s pain is felt with every word. It is a bittersweet resolution to the mounting issues with Basil. Sitterson nails this aspect while changing up the dynamics in the Guard. This moves events into Crater’s complex ordeal. Crater has always been a wild card ever since his addition. The writing brings him back to the “ticking time bomb” nature as his latest mission brings out old feelings. The results in a devasting move which leaves a defiant close in its’ wake. The tension is mounting…who will break first?

Dougherty and Astone showcase Katja’s mounting rage with their opening panels. It transitions to a strong two-page spread of Crater’s latest mission. The mood is explosive as Crater starts assessing the scene after a fallen member returns to base. Panels show his rising anger as the moment sets in. Crater has never been one to sit on the sidelines. This aura carries into push for deadly response actions. It does not fail on its’ assignment.

The art lets Katja loose when she finally confronts Hora. There’s no denying her actions as a two page spread unloads her direct responses to the guilty parties. Showing the fear in Hora and Fweha add another layer to the uneasy room. This spins into another two page ordeal where Katja puts a nail in the coffin as far as her connection with Basil. Panels deliver on unloading her sadness and frustration. Once completed, Crater sends readers home with a bold move. His unhinged nature flourishes as he proclaims what needs to be done. This leads into a shocking full page with Gloria’s expression speaking louder than any words. Brace for what’s coming next.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

Cracks in the Guard’s foundation leads to a move that changes everything! Sitterson’s writing dives into the deep emotions with dangerous consequences. Dougherty and Astone go for gold with sensational art. The complexity of each isue makes this series jump out from the rest!
