Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds here.

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #2 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo & Lucas Gattoni(DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire goes in a very different direction for this chapter. The mental anguish of Firestorm seems centered around one person. Readers watch as Ronnie Raymond starts reliving his past. It is a sad look into a child who just wants to be better. The writing doesn’t shield punches as young Raymond is dealt personal blows while striving to succeed. Inner monologue paints the sad picture of events This boils over to a fateful encounter with Dr. Stein. It provides a steady anchor before a tailspin revs up the drama.

The tragic day of the birth of Firestorm comes into full view. Writing is tense as Stein’s paranoia seems to get the best of him. This leads to the forming of the great hero. From here, the events get cloudy. Lemire throws a curve into the mix. Seemingly creating a separate entity all its own leads to a volatile confrontation. The fallout results in another drastic measure by the DoD. It is one that is expected for the threat level reached. Without a soul, Firestorm is a loose cannon. The final page sees the glass break as the emergency situation has begun.

It results in a comic book-esque look with Maiolo’s coloring giving it that throwback feel. Raymond’s past is filled with troubled looks as he vies for approval. The personal looks show how he has developed into a searching soul. This changes when he meets Dr. Stein. Their meeting shows a curiosity to the situation they are in. Once Stein’s paranoia kicks in, the panel tell a vastly different tale. No longer focused on Raymond, the art shows Stein in panic. It results in a full page shot of Firestorm born in shadows. Readers start making their guesses as to what’s going on. This gets amplified with a bold two page spread. Raymond’s mind starts to break under the pressure of events. This results in a haunting confrontation. It leaves more uncertainty in its’ wake. This moves events into a drastic finish.
