THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1 (DC COMICS)

No one man should have the powers of a god.

In the case of Firestorm, that has always been a merging of two into one powerful being. This has always come with its’ fair share of mystery but the current situation takes it all.

Bedford, Colorado is a small town. When Firestorm crashes into the quiet community, he does an unthinkable action. He starts experimenting on all in sight.

Wait, what?!

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo & Lucas Gattoni(DC Comics) continues DC’s Next Level Movement.

Let’s take a deeper dive into what in the world is happening here.

THE FURY OF FIRESTORM #1 by Jeff Lemire, Rafael de Latorre, Marcelo Maiolo & Lucas Gattoni(DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Lemire throws a horror element into this opening chapter. Seeing Firestorm crash into the quiet town feels out of the ordinary enough. Watching him use his powers in such a psychotic manner is very telling. The writing showcases him as a broken soul stretching for anything to hold onto. This uneasiness doesn’t leave the pages easily. Lemire works in a few angles of disbelief surrounding the hero. Firestorm isn’t’ the only one affected in this situation.

Readers see a name from the past as Lorraine Reilly returns. Her story comes to light as Lemire recaps the unique past of Firestorm. This puts them on course on a mission to find the Nuclear Man. The inevitable meeting leads to a true uncertainty of events. As events progress, it becomes clear nothing is as what it seems. Lemire teases more suspense as encounters lead to new pathways. The closing is fast in encountering the conflict. There will be plenty of questions to comprehend after this but the final page delivers one of its’ own. If true, what does it mean for the rest of the DCU? only one way to find out.

MORE FROM DC NEXT LEVEL!

De Latorre & Maiolopace readers through the slow, methodical breakdown in Bedford to open the chapter. His subtle walk around town teases more lurking beneath the scenes. A new full sht exposes his initial attack. This leads to a chilling half page panel. It is followed by a smaller time sitting on a bench. Readers can sense his remorse of action taken. It sways them from understanding the true nature of his attacks. Events don’t take long to go back into horror mode. Another great half page shows his evil actions at work.

Once the smoke clears, Reilly’s time takes over. Her interactions with the soldiers elevates the stakes even higher. The full page recap is a great piece to get new readers caught up a bit on the character. This leads into Reilly’s appearance in Bedford. A full page shot shows her in her Firehawk costume. As the walk through town, the scenes are anxious. Firestorm’s reactions are cold. This moves into a more “comic” feel with Ronnie Raymond taking lead. The throwback hides the real problems at hand. Once back in present, the danger hits a fever pitch. This leads into the closing pages which raises some eyebrows. The final panel will have people talking as a simple note might unlock a greater mystery at hand.

FINAL GRADE: 9

Firestorm returns with a monster game of smoke and mirrors in this initial launch. Lemire keeps readers guessing right form the opening pages. De Latorre & Maiolohit strides as they bring out a dark side of the Nuclear Man. A new era begins on an incredible note that readers simply can’t miss.
