THE FLASH #34 by Ryan North, Gavin Guidry, Adriano Lucas & Buddy Beaudoin (DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

It’s still early, but North’s storytelling has got a firm grasp of what makes the Flash work with readers. His discussion with Mr. Terrific is insightful as the break down Wally’s theory about his new abilities. It is put to the test quickly as a vision of a Grodd invasion takes hold.

The writing shows an unorthodox method on handling this. Confronting Grodd before this happens spills into a few avenues. Readers watch as it dabbles in curiosity and humor. The result is an unlikely outcome, but not without hiccups. As the closing act commences, Wally’s gifts prove their flaws as they find more trouble than bargained for. A fun read never the less.

Guidry and Lucas show Terrific’s concerns with Wally’s new powers. His reactions show wonder but with caution. This leads West into a full page premonition of fear. The panel structure for confronting Grodd varies to heighten the powers’ effect. Lucas’ coloring shines in these moments.

None might be greater than the amazing two page spread of Wally presenting a proposal with Grodd and its’ multiple look outcome. Guidry maximizes every inch of the page to deliver this moment. This steers events back to a sense of normalcy until the closing act. Once here, the full page closing shot shows Wally might have been off the mark with grave consequences.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The future is now…or is it? That is the question plaguing Wally West in a very engaging tale. North complicates Wally’s life in a most profound way. Guidry and Lucas create unique looks at how negotiating with a rogue can lead to danger. This run has been one that readers can’t afford to miss!
