SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #14 by Dan Slott, Lucas Meyer, Giuliano Peratelli & Dave Sharpe(DC Comics)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Slott keys in on the emotional pull of the elder Kent for this straight-forward chapter. The wild scene at Steelworks has now expanded its’ reach to the residents of Smallville. Watching the new form of Green Kryptonite serves as a great homage to classic horror elevates the threat. It serves as a great backdrop to the main event unfolding. Young Kent’s rage is hard to contain. The writing shows the unstable measures being unloaded. This builds into a emotionally charged showdown that gets a boost of players entering the game.
Readers watch as the Dynamic Duo intervene with a more invested interest in the Young Kent’s truths. Damian’s anger takes over as he’s not happy seeing a misguided version of his lost best friend. The action ramps up from this point. Batman’s imposing presences calms the other drama unfolding with the Kryptonite outbreak. It leads to more traditional superhero themes before circling back to the Kent boys issues. The drama builds to a superb finish, where the elder Jon Kent proves he is the true successor to his father’s mantle. His dialogue ruffles some characters but not before making his case. The fallout is upended in a surprise twist, leaving the audience in a more somber point. An excellent closing sequence with more possibilities in the stars. Can’t ask for much better than that.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW HERE!
Meyer & Peratelli don’t delay in bringing the fight early. The full page image shows the chaos ensuing as Steelworks implodes. This calls for a frantic evacuation. Panels fill with worry as Smallville comes under attack. It leads to some quirky hijinks as the play is called. It differs from the Kent’s face-off. The full shot of young Jon ready to strike sends a definitive message. It gives way to a classic image by moonlight. The panel welcomes in the guests of honor, poised to handle things from here.
Damian’s aerial entrance is given a magnificent full page image. It’s complimented by another full page of his first punch. The kid gloves are off as the two boys begin their scrap. Batman takes over his scenes with a strong half panel. This moves to a quicker conclusion of this side-plot. Once events come back to the Youngest Kent, the story lets others dive into the heavy emotional weight. This allows the eldest Kent to step up to his own issues while handling them in a unique fashion. The fallout throws in a few more deeply sewed plot panels into the mix, leaving a defeated calm in its’ wake. The final panel teases some optimism heading into a future uncertain. Solid work form the team on concluding this tale.
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
It’s one Jon Kent’s last stand but whose is it? Slott balances the action with invested drama. Meyer & the team construct a phenomenal showcase of Jon Kent: past, present and possible future. An excellent look at the man facing the future of tomorrow.
