SUPERMAN UNLIMITED #14 by Dan Slott, Lucas Meyer, Dave Messina, Giuliano Peratelli & Dave Sharpe(DC Comics)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

Slott leans into the contrasts of the two Kents heavily in the first part of the story. Seeing how they handle a team-up goes into a few directions. Young Jon’s attempts to push limits causes concern. This echoes back on the Kent farm where Lois is talking with Clark’s parents. Their conversation is honest in summing up all the calamity post DC K.O. seeing the vulnerability show helps to amplify the stakes at hand. This mood carries back to Metropolis as another villain starts exposing certain reactions in the youngest Kent.

Readers watch as another fight raises more eyebrows concerning the misplaced boy. Slott stages this for a solid build heading int the final act. Once events go to Steelworks, the mood gets more serious. Irons’ work on the El Caldero kryptonite leads into a place no one is expecting. The writing swings into a horror element as events start transpiring. Steel’s tone becomes more worried as the problem grows. It sees the Kents arrive to help. From here, Slott’s long play delivers on a pay-off. Heading into the closing pages, the secrets are out. Brace for the truth in this issue. The final page cements an incredible swerve that will have fans talking!

Meyer & the team deliver on steady action sequences to start. The Kents in action geta few “cellphone” panels that pop on the page. Their interactions become more complex as young Jon continues to grow impatient on his control. This is a stark contrast form the Kent farm. Panels show the calm talk overtake the mood as all breakdown what has happened. Lois’ worry is on full display as she knows something is very wrong.

The panels escalate events even further into worry as mannerisms don’t match up. Tomorrow Man’s worry starts creeping through his mask. There is great action to set these moments up. A full shot of the pair descending underground starts their last combat before Smallville. Readers watch as events at Steelworks quickly spiral out of control. The horror element starts flowing through the scenes. One half page shows a brutal finish to one of the scientists. Pacing is high as the end game is revealed. A full shot of red rage encompasses one character. It leads into the final page. Another pair has had a vested interesting in the young Jon as well via full page. Suffice to say, the close cements a gut-punch of an ending.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The truth behind young Jon Kent is revealed and the Kent family may never be the same again! Slott delivers on a solid build and incredible finish. Meyer & the team balance out the frantic pacing to deliver a show-stopping ending. Expect this finish to have readers talking at the shops.
