There are no friends in the quest for power.

As the Old Dragon is dying, there is a small group of possible successors. Vying her way into the fold is Cecilia Slaughter. With her protege Maxine watching the elder leader, Cecilia holds court until a horrible situation occurs.

A group of White Masks have misfired on a hunt. There are dead children and the media now has the story. Cecilia attempts to do damage control for this but it is too late….

Let’s take a closer look at recent events.

Brombal locks in on Cecilia’s attempts to regain control. From the offset, she is a step behind. Arriving on the scene, it is quick to realize she is unprepared for the moment. While the beast is attacking all, Maxine is given orders form afar. The writing quickly establishes the frantic pace and losing battle. Readers can sense the fear in Cecilia’s voice. This only fuels Colin’s plans even further.

The wheels move fast as Colin catches Maxine in her attempts to help. The interaction is powered by deceit and falsehoods. This trickles down in a deep conversation between Colin and Cecilia. Their back and forth shows the struggles for the crown. It leaves events in a very dark place for one. There is no escaping the effects this move will have on the story. To complicate matters further, the last page introduces something into play that will raise some eyebrows. Solid writing on display here.

Turtulici and Napolitano deliver a set of two page splashes with multiple panel breakdowns. It conveys the chaotic scene Cecilia has walked into. Andworld’s letting exemplifies the dangers at hand. The use of official paperwork is a nice touch to connect to the readers. It show the process of assignments while leading to more issues on the horizon. If the hunt wasn’t cursed enough, its’ about to get worse.

Maxine’s mission is also gifted the two page spread set-up. This moves events quickly to the broodish stand-off waiting for her. Colin’s cold demeanor doesn’t leave the panels as he attempts to manipulate. This results in loud outbursts from Cecilia as she processes what is happening. A far cry form her full page shot of calm earlier in the book. This leads into a busy closing act. The final page is an odd vision that has a great guessing game behind it. Take your best shot.

FINAL GRADE: 8.7

Cecilia’s world is crashing all around as the hunt hits another roadblock. Brombal weaves in the power plays through the chaotic scenes. Turtulici and Napolitano showcase the growing panic as things fall apart fast. A superb display of the depths one will go to have it all.
