SUMMER OF SUPERGIRL SPECIAL #1 (DC COMICS)

The Maiden of Might is ready to take on the summer!

With a brand new Hollywood blockbuster film set to drop in late June 2026, SUPERGIRL is poised to break out in pop culture! To celebrate the launch, DC Comics is putting Kara Zor-El in a monster special edition.

It’s only fitting that her main counter part is her “frienemy” in the film….LOBO!

SUMMER OF SUPERGIRL SPECIAL #1 by Sophie Campbell, Belén Ortega, Tríona Farrell, Becca Carey, Gail Simone, Emma Kubert, Sandra Hope, Trish Mulvihill, Ariana Maher, Mark Waid, Cian Tormey, Alex Guimarães & Steve Wands kicks off the “Summer Of Supergirl” with three all new stories!

Let’s take a closer look at what unfolds here!

SUMMER OF SUPERGIRL SPECIAL #1 by Sophie Campbell, Belén Ortega, Tríona Farrell, Becca Carey, Gail Simone, Emma Kubert, Sandra Hope, Trish Mulvihill, Ariana Maher, Mark Waid, Cian Tormey, Alex Guimarães & Steve Wands (DC COMICS)

*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***

The issue has a compilation of multiple stories. Due to the amount, the overview of each tale will be shorter than usual reviews.

“MAIN MAN’S BEST FRIEND ” by Campbell, Ortega, Farrell, & Carey

The opening and largest story of the special is a continuation of events from Lobo #4. The arrest form the altercation leads to a fun banter amongst the lead characters. Campbell plays into the quirks with much success. It leads to an unpredictable outcome. Sentencing Lobo to therapy allows another character to upend events. Readers watch as Crush adds a new dynamic into events. This all rolls back to Midvale for more hijinks to ensue.

Readers watch as the normalcy of Supergirl’s town doesn’t sit well with Dawg or his owner. The writing shows the friction take hold and move events into a welcomed second round of combat. The mood is much lighter as they battle through the nice suburban town. There are some one-liners that steal scenes. Events move to a fitting and enjoyable close. The art leans into the good nature of Supergirl’s persona to put Lobo in very uncomfortable situations. Readers get a solid take to start off the special before the other teams take flight

“lost girls” by Simone, Kubert, Hope, Mulvihill, & Maher

Simone pairs the Maiden of Might with another young hero: Mary Marvel. Their conversations steer from being hero admiration to finding more in common than expected. The writing shows Supergirl overwhelmed to not be in her cousin’s shadow. It also allows Marvel to gravitate towards much desired support in her heroic alter ego. Seeing the two forge a bond makes for a powerful moment.

Kubert’s art shines in these pages. The initial punch from Supergirl onto her opposition fires up the action. It’s matched by Mary Marvel’s entrance. A full shot of the pair taking care of business will bring fans to their feet. Pacing slows down to see them discover more alike than anyone may have thought. Panels hone in on the growing friendship and where it looks to take them. The parting panel cements their bond and honestly, a “Women of Tomorrow” series by this creative team would be incredible!

SPEAKING OF LOBO #4…..

“who is supergirl?” by Waid, Tormey, Guimarães & Wands

The closing story gives a unique recap of the complex history of Supergirl. Waid is the perfect writer for his area (“New History Of The DC Universe”…need I say more). Using Natasha Irons with Jon & Conner Kent to go through her file is a fun twist on recapping her legacy. Tormey’s art brings out some classic moments while forging a few thoughts surrounding others. It leaves with a better understanding of Kara Zor-El with a full page image to say goodbye with.

FINAL GRADE: 8.8

The Maiden of Might starts off the summer with a enjoyable trek into her legacy as a hero. Each creative team showcases a new side to Supergirl while reminding the audience she is not like her cousin. The art teams craft distinct looks at events while maintain a heroic vibe throughout. A welcomed addition into the ever-growing legacy of the Woman of Tomorrow.
