Writing:

Brombal juggles a few moving parts while establishing some foundation for this new squad. The writing shows the unrest in Brazil while a new business is making a controversial act. This leads to some hesitant thoughts on what they’re walking into. Flor gets the spotlight in this sequence as her emotions cannot be contained. It steals some thunder from Static’s inquiry of joining to allow the drama to sink in further.

Once the team arrives in Akahim, readers see the struggles of welcoming the Titans into the city. Dialogue is fueled with mixed reactions as all are trying to find the best course of action. It doesn’t take long for events to come right to the city. This allows the team to spread their superhero wings as the threat hits. The aftermath is well staged as it gives one member a long-overdue plot to work from. Pacing is steady as the final page stages more conflict. A very steady set-up issue which the new team benefits from.

art & lettering:

The art opens with a solid full page of the team flying. It’s complimented by a two page spread spotlighting the issues in Brazil. Panels move to some fast action as the ship is under attack. it allows the squad to break away and showcase some building drama. This is apparent with Red Devil and Jon Kent. Their growing friction overlooks the chaotic scene before an emergency crash landing is needed. Once here, events roll into a calmer stage.

Akahim is given an excellent two page spread. It invites readers into its’ quiet charm before letting higher emotions take over. Every panel with Batgirl in it seems to draw out her ire. This carries forth to the new conflict hitting the city. A great full page team shot prepares readers for the forthcoming action. As the monster is handling the heroes, a surprise factor provides a quiet finish to the fight. It sets up a series of smaller panels developing some sub-plots while teasing what’s next. Overall, a steady building issue.

FINAL GRADE: 8.3

A trip to Akahim becomes more than the team is ready to handle with this latest chapter. Brombal lets Flor get the lead role with a solid script. The art team showcases the underlying drama while addressing the monsters in the vicinity. A curious tale that has much room to expand its’ impressions with.
