Bennett has some fun taking Billy out of his comfort zone while showcasing his doubts. The opening sequence with Rita haunting him serves as a strong domino to fall as Kim tries changing course. The writing shows her excitement clashing with his reluctance to step out. This becomes reinforced (to a degree) by the fellow rangers. Once the date begins, it comes across as normal as events get in the MMPR universe. Factor in a disturbance between a changing couple and Billy’s confidence gets tested early.
Readers watch as he processes his loneliness with varying degrees. The writing shows his self-loathing while attempting to force him to accept change. It is a far cry form Kim’s valiant efforts. Her bringing up the ex on the date signals trouble before the secrets are revealed. Pacing allows for a good build-up to the major conflict at hand. Once here, the story jumps into familiar scenarios. As the action builds to the conclusion, the aftermath is textbook in delivery. Readers get one last shake-up with the last page that is welcomed for its’ trouble. A fun, classic Rangers tale that delivers as advertised.

Sevy and Jensen open with a full shot of Billy dueling with Rita. the encounter gives way to a solid two page Rangers sparing session. Readers watch as Kim’s joy starts ruffling Billy’s feathers until he caves in. The reactions for the fellow rangers are positive save Jason. His expressions showcase his nervousness to answer with his thoughts. It’s an awkward scene before sending events into the date itself.
Panels spotlight Billy trying to navigate through his conversation. Early on, he tips off something seems off. It becomes an afterthought. A fantastic two page image shows the confliction in Billy’s reactions. This is timed with the sudden shake-up of the night out. An excellent full page brings in the threats of the issue. It helps to escort a strong two page spread to bring forth some action. The aftermath begins with a classic half panel. Seeing the Rangers like this is as vintage as it gets. The aftermath has is’ fair share of emotions involved. none are greater than the final full page. It gives the chapter a nice walk-off moment until next round commences.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
Date Night pushes Billy out of his comfort zone in a timeless Rangers tale. Bennett’s writing gets the team out if its’ comfort corners and brings them to the spotlight. Sevy and Jensen never shy away from Kim and Billy’s thoughts concerning the event. A solid addition into the Power Rangers lore.
