*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Bennett takes the Rangers into uncomfortable territory right from the starts. The introduction of Rita Rabiosa comes with a heightened sense of fear. Watching Billy force the Rangers reunion shows the complexity of this move. Readers watch as the team has clearly accepted life beyond the grid. Their conversations show the personal growth into new roles. More teases are added to give a sense of responsibility to taking the morphers once again. The result is a mixed bag of questions.
The issue takes a more familiar turn into facing the new threat. Readers see the veteran heroes pick up their old habits. In seeing this, one wonders why they gave up the roles in the first place? It conveys their desperate attempts to slow down the new challenge. There are quite a few exciting sequences as the battle rages on. Pacing is at a high level as they look for any hope. It helps move events to mysterious finish. To where that final panel leads is anyone’s guess.
MORE POWER RANGERS!
Griffith and Jensen open with a full image of Rita teasing her plans. A string two page spread shows the Rangers summoned back into duty. Their expressions vary as they start grasping what has happened. One full page upstages this moment with the team coming together to celebrate. The mood shifts to business rather quickly as the threat draws attention to the group. It spirals immediate action with a result all will be pleased to see.
A superb full page shows the team back in their costumes, ready to rock. Dukeshire’s lettering gives a fun nod to their initial attempts of rescue. Readers watch as a series of two page spreads dives further into the mythos of the group. No one will be upset seeing the zords crash the party. It moves events into more serious territory. Panels fill with sinking danger. The images move to the struggles of the fight. The rangers’ frustration grows with each move. It hits a breaking point with the final panel. Seeing the event play out, it serves as a safe landing spot for this initial opening round.
FINAL GRADE: 8.4
The Power Rangers are a little bit older, but ever the young heroes at heart in this debut chapter. Bennett takes the fandom into an unlikely place via the writing. Griffith and Jensen give the pages an energetic feel as the Rangers hit the ground running. No matter the age, it is always Morphin time with the original defenders of Angel Grove!
