MEDIEVAL #4 (COMIXOLOGY ORIGINALS)
It’s the bottom of the ninth for Danny Landau!
After he and his girlfriend Gina Rabinowitz wake up in medieval times, they have had their fair share of challenges.
Gina finds herself at the side of the one and only King Arthur. Danny doesn’t enjoy the regal life. Instead, he’s been focused on reuniting with Gina. After a tip leads him in the right direction, the destination is not what he thought. The relationship status is now “complicated.”
A tournament will decide their future. The odds are not in his favor but much like baseball, it ain’t over till it’s over!
MEDIEVAL #4 by Neil Kleid & Alex Cormack (Comixology Originals) delivers its’ pen-ultimate issue.
Let’s take a ringside seat to the games unfolding now.
MEDIEVAL #4 by Neil Kleid & Alex Cormack (Comixology Originals)
*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Kleid begins this issue with a new lead perspective. Showing Gina’s journey into the past proves some clarity (and another reason to hate Red Sox fans). This allows readers to get a better perspective into where her head’s at involving the tournament. It also gives way to the true villain of this tale. His dialogue caters to the mischief he is dabbling in. Once this is crafted, the story heads into its’ main attraction. Much like any good rally in baseball, all it takes is one big swing to start it.
The opening conflict unleashes the wild side of Danny onto Camelot. There are zero eff’s given and no punches pulled. Kleid keeps the humor and dialogue on point as Danny’s audibles challenge the King. Even with a bright spot on the horizon, one character is crashing the party and looking for answers. This leads into a more grounded approach between Danny and Gina. As much as time has moved them out of their comfort zone, their relationship is still complex. Their interaction causes a nice distraction before the closing surprise. To say a curve ball is thrown in to play is an understatement. Judging by the last panel, Danny is gonna have to go Jeter in October to make this into a win.

Cormack deliver’s on Gina’s “origin” story with much of the same flare shown for Danny’s. A half panel welcomes her to a Dragon in this period of History. As pages progress, more motivations become front and center. The art displays the uneasiness as manipulations are being worked. Adding in the personal touches from the Bronx Bombers help make a solid transition into combat. There’s no turning back from where Danny is taking things now.
The bloody displays exposes a man with a dangerous mean streak. A bloody half-page shows Danny’s ferociousness. It is as raw as it gets for a fight. Nothing is off limits. Once the carnage stops, Cormack adds in some subtle humor to panels. The “Over The Top” reference works very well due to the imagery. Once Gina becomes involved, her rageful looks can’t be ignored. It leads into a few fun interactions between the combat. Even as Danny pleads his case, Gina remains unsure of what this all means. This takes a seat on the bench as the closing pages kick into gear. Adding in more sports history leads into an awkward, but strong finish. The final panel will draw a reaction pending your sports allegiance. As a Yankee fan, I did not take off points for this :-)
FINAL GRADE: 8.8
Danny takes his biggest swing yet to find a way back in this pen-ultimate chapter. Kleid switches the rotation with another character taking lead via the writing. Cormack delivers on fantastic imagery to set-up the final at-bat. Get your popcorn ready for this last stand!
