STORY OVERVIEW:
Savanti reminisces about how he corrupted Metalhead and made it the most dangerous weapon possible. Now, he chooses Metalhead to destroy Donatello, but Savanti gets overconfident and lowers Metalhead’s defenses. This turns out to be a mistake as Donnie locates Metalhead’s weak spot and shuts him down. This infuriates Savanti who banishes both of them to the other dimension. In this other dimension he finds his two brothers and a few other dimensions Turtles. They all start to try and figure out how they can get out of there and get back to defeat Savanti. Will they get this done in time to save Michelangelo or will he have to do battle with one of his best friends?
WRITING:
This issue reveals where the Turtles have been sent and some cracks in the facade of Savanti. Caleb Goellner does an excellent job of revealing these things and building on the story that we’ve been following. Goellner really shows the overconfidence that is becoming a weakness for Savanti. This is allowing for mistakes to be made, and he makes two huge ones in this issue. The first is he lowers the defenses on Metalhead, which allows Donnie to be the first Turtle to successfully win in a battle. The second and more important one is causing him to not only banish Donnie, but also Metalhead, which may come back to haunt him later. These cracks will surely shape what happens next and will continue Savanti’s spiral.
ARTWORK:
The artwork in this issue really matches the tone of the story and immerses the reader into the world. Omar Francia does an amazing job with all of the world and character designs. Francia really shines with the art of the other dimensions Turtles, specifically the Saturday Morning Cartoon version of Leonardo. That design is spot on and will make every old school fan of the original cartoon series rejoice. The colors compliment the art perfectly as Luis Antonio Delgado hits a homerun with his color pallet.
