*** POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING ***
Young takes readers on an unforgettable look into Lobo’s past for a heaping of hijinx ensuing. Dr. Bixwell makes a call to Lobo about renewing his license. The writing is exactly how one would think this inquiry would go. Lobo’s inexperience in these manners proves enlightening as he starts answering the questions. Readers watch as he responds in his crude manner. Once a chord is struck, the story moves into a more diabolical direction.
Readers watch as the disney-esque retelling of a Lobo memory takes hold of the book. His time trying to acquire space dolphins lead to even greater mischief. The dialogue with his teacher and Czarnian High Council echoes a danger forthcoming with the boy. The writing shows how he feels he is actually liberating the animals at the Zoo. Once a new Mauve Lantern arrives, everyhting goes off the rails. It is a bumpy ride as Lobo amplified with powers can lead to no good. Once the Green Lanterns get involved, it is game over for someone. A fun break from the everyday norm that is Lobo’s life.
READ LAST ISSUE’S REVIEW!
Corona & Beaulieu take the present day timeline. The initial page does a solid throwback to his Omega Men debut with his outfit. Dr. Bixwell looks every bit of the creepy alien psychologist. Their exchanges are as clashing as they can get. Lobo’s sarcasm meets no limits. The joy in his face as he responds is cruel, but effective. This matches the same energy at the end of the book. The final page wraps up moments as nonchalant as Lobo took the questions. A safe reset point till next round.
Baldari took the art reigns for the majority of the issue. The Disney/Bluth cartoon influence dominates this portion of the story. A fantastic two page spread shows Lil’ Lobo in his evil glory. Dalex, The Mauve Lantern makes a splash via half page panel. This moves into a drastic page of action by Lobo which leads to more antics. Readers watch what he does with his new power ring. Panels pop with the debauchery ensuing. Once a Green Lantern arrives, panels see some fun shape battles move towards a solid finish. This portions’ final page is a full shot fitting for Saturday mornings. Excellent work.
FINAL GRADE: 8.7
Lobo’s attempt at a psych exam leads to nothing but evil trouble inside this fun tale. Young’s writing showcases the young Czarnian’s rampage. Corona & Baldari each give the Main Man distinct images, bringing out the best of his worst. This is everything fans could possibly want from a Lobo series!
